Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of hydroquinone with aid of diatomite-modified wood ceramics

Ruqin Gao et al.

Summary: Diatomite-modified wood ceramics (DMWCs) were successfully prepared as an adsorbent to remove hydroquinone from wastewater. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of DMWCs on hydroquinone were comprehensively studied. The results showed that DMWCs, with a porous structure, consisting of quartz and crystalline graphite, achieved a removal rate and adsorption capacity of 76.8% and 12.31 mg/g, respectively, at a hydroquinone dosage of 200 mg and pH 7. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided a better fit for the adsorption process of hydroquinone, with a correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99) higher than other models. The Freundlich equation, Redlich-Peterson equation, and Koble-Corrigan equation all fitted well with the adsorption isotherm data, with correlation coefficients (R2) higher than 0.93. The regeneration test demonstrated that DMWCs maintained an elimination rate of hydroquinone above 73% even after 11 times of reuse. This study presents DMWCs as an effective adsorbent for the removal of hydroquinone from wastewater.

Selective adsorption of gadolinium from real leachate using a natural bentonite clay

Guilherme L. Dotto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the recovery of Gd3+ from real leachate of phosphogypsum using natural bentonite clay. The adsorption study revealed that the clay has typical bentonite characteristics and can effectively adsorb Gd3+. The kinetics and thermodynamics of the adsorption process were analyzed, and it was found that the Langmuir model and Avrami fractional order model were suitable for describing the adsorption isotherms and kinetic data, respectively. The study also showed that citric acid was an efficient desorbing agent for Gd3+ from the bentonite, and the clay could selectively recover Gd3+ from the real leachate of phosphogypsum.

Wood waste-based functionalized natural hydrochar for the effective removal of Ce(III) ions from aqueous solution

Glaydson S. dos Reis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption and recovery of cerium (Ce(III)), a rare earth element, from an aqueous solution using a sustainable hydrochar made from wood waste. The hydrochar contained various surface functional groups, which significantly influenced its adsorption capacity. The pH of the solution strongly affected the Ce(III) removal, with the highest removal efficiency achieved at pH 6.0. The hydrochar exhibited high efficiency in Ce(III) adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 327.9 mg g(-1) at 298 K. The adsorption kinetics followed the general order model, while the equilibrium process fit the Liu isotherm model. The Ce(III) adsorption mechanism on the hydrochar involved electrostatic interactions and chelation between surface functional groups and Ce(III). The hydrochar also demonstrated excellent regeneration capacity using sulfuric acid as an eluent. This research presents a sustainable approach for developing an efficient adsorbent for Ce(III) removal with excellent physicochemical properties.

Adsorption of cerium (III) by zeolites synthesized from kaolinite after rare earth elements (REEs) recovery

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: This study focused on the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from kaolinite through selective leaching and the synthesis of zeolites from the leaching residue. The results showed that the pH static leaching method achieved over 90% leaching of REEs from metakaolinite, while only extracting less than 2% of the major constituents. Zeolites with different compositions were successfully synthesized, and high purity sodalite exhibited superior adsorption capacity for Ce3+ compared to zeolite A. These findings suggest that kaolinite could be a potential source for REE recovery, and the resulting leaching residue could be used for the synthesis of zeolites as promising adsorbents for Ce3+ recovery.
