ZIF-8@Zn-MOF-74 core-shell metal-organic framework (MOF) with open metal sites: Synthesis, characterization, and gas adsorption performance

Somayeh Norouzbahari et al.

Summary: An efficient hierarchical metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8@Zn-MOF-74, with a core-shell structure and coordinately open/unsaturated metal sites (OMS), was successfully synthesized using a facile post-synthetic ligand exchange method. The core-shell structure consists of a SOD-type ZIF-8 core for molecular sieving and a Zn-MOF-74 shell with larger pore size for easier entrance and diffusion of gas molecules. The presence of OMS in the Zn-MOF-74 structure also contributes to a greater adsorption capacity. The prepared MOFs have a high BET surface area and total pore volume, making them promising for gas adsorption applications.

Preparation of hierarchically porous PVP/ZIF-8 in supercritical CO2 by PVP-induced defect-formation method for high-efficiency gas adsorption

Meilin Yin et al.

Summary: A new synthetic strategy using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a modulator and environmentally friendly supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as a solvent is developed to rapidly enlarge the pore size of microporous ZIF-8. The high solubility and low mass transfer resistance of reactants in scCO2, along with the low surface tension of scCO2, are crucial for the preparation of structurally stable PVP/ZIF-8 with hierarchically pores. The PVP modulator not only facilitates pore size, but also induces coordination defects, exposing more coordination metal sites.
