Pore-scale imaging of asphaltene deposition with permeability reduction and wettability alteration

Yihuai Zhang et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed an in situ micro-CT imaging technique to investigate asphaltene deposition during multiphase flow. Experimental observations and analysis show that asphaltene precipitation can significantly reduce rock permeability and alter wettability, which is important for reservoir characterization and remediation.

Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvent and Glycolipid Biosurfactant as Green Asphaltene Inhibitors: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Ali Sanati et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using environmentally-friendly chemicals, a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) and a glycolipid biosurfactant known as rhamnolipid (RL), as asphaltene precipitation inhibitors. Experimental results confirm that these green chemicals interact with asphaltenes and alter their structure. Additionally, theoretical analysis based on the extended DLVO theory suggests that acid-base interactions play a key role in retarding asphaltene precipitation.

Potential Application of Fe2O3 and Functionalized SiO2 Nanoparticles for Inhibiting Asphaltene Precipitation in Live Oil at Reservoir Conditions

Fatemeh Mahmoudi Alemi et al.

Summary: This study synthesized Fe2O3 and functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles to investigate their effects on asphaltene precipitation and aggregation in live oils. The results showed that Fe2O3 nanoparticles better controlled asphaltene precipitation compared to F-SiO2, leading to increased stability and reduced asphaltene structure size. TEM images confirmed these results and indicated an increase in aromatic sheet interlayer spacing.

Investigation of the interaction between nanoparticles, asphaltenes, and silica surfaces by real-time quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation

Tatiana Montoya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nanofluids as wettability alternators and inhibitors of asphaltene precipitation and formation damage. Nanoparticles with different chemical surfaces were dispersed in NaCl brine and tested for their interactions with asphaltenes using QCM-D. Various characterization techniques were employed to analyze the properties of nanoparticles. The results showed that 10 nm-sized BN-based nanofluids were more effective in treating deposited asphaltenes in heptol 70 and toluene, demonstrating a concentration-dependent effect.

Impact of Asphaltene Precipitation and Deposition on Wettability and Permeability

Isah Mohammed et al.

Summary: Asphaltene precipitation and deposition have been a long-standing formation damage issue, with the most significant effects being wettability alteration and permeability impairment. The mechanism of wettability alteration is predominantly surface adsorption, and techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, potential, and high-resolution microscopy are promising for evaluation. Permeability impairment is mainly caused by surface deposition, pore plugging, and fine migration, with challenges in distinguishing changes due to adsorption from those due to pore size reduction.
