Elucidating the effect of Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratio upon SiO2-MnO-CaF2-Al2O3-based welding fluxes: Structural analysis and thermodynamic evaluation

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratio on SiO2-MnO-CaF2-Al2O3-based fluxes was investigated, focusing on the morphologies of weld metal and slag shell. It was found that flux viscosity could be significantly reduced by increasing the Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratio from 0.1 to 0.6, with negligible changes thereafter. The compositional dependence of flux behaviors was elucidated through structural analysis using spectroscopic techniques and molecular dynamics simulation.

TiO2-Assisted Microstructural Variations in the Weld Metal of EH36 Shipbuilding Steel Subject to High Heat Input Submerged Arc Welding

Yongwu Wu et al.

Summary: Two comparable fluxes, pure CaF2 and CaF2-40 wt pct TiO2, were used to modify shipbuilding steels under high heat input submerged arc welding to investigate the unique functions of TiO2 addition. Compared with pure CaF2, TiO2-containing flux could increase the width of columnar austenite from 119.2 +/- 18.1 to 201.5 +/- 32.2 μm. Furthermore, TiO2 could significantly enhance the fraction of acicular ferrite, primarily through the formation of Ti-bearing inclusions.

Revealing the structural role of MgO in aluminosilicate glasses

Binghui Deng et al.

Summary: The addition of MgO to aluminosilicate glasses has a dual role as glass network modifier/charge compensator and network former, depending strongly on the composition of other oxides in the glass. The non-linear evolution of the isokom annealing temperature upon increasing Al2O3 content in the peraluminous regime can be rationalized in terms of the combined effects of short-range connectivity and medium-range ring size distribution.

Bubble Evolution Behaviors Induced by CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-CaF2 Fluxes Subjected to High Heat Input Submerged Arc Welding

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: Bubble evolution behaviors have been thoroughly documented in the solidified slags detached from EH36 shipbuilding steel weld metals processed by CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-CaF2 fluxes. The decrease in CaF2 content leads to a decrease in bubble retention tendency, mainly caused by the disappearance of fluorite and cuspidine and the formation of amorphous phases.

Probing Viscosity and Structural Variations in CaF2-SiO2-MnO Welding Fluxes

Yanyun Zhang et al.

Summary: The demand for CaF2-free welding fluxes for high-strength low-alloy steel grades has led to the development of fluxes suitable for high heat input applications. By varying the mass ratio of MnO/(CaF2 + MnO) in the CaF2-SiO2-MnO flux system, a flux design strategy has been proposed. The substitution of MnO for CaF2 has been found to affect the viscosity and structure of the flux, indicating MnO acts as a network-breaker. The correlation between viscosity and non-bridging oxygen per silicon atom suggests a potential DOP index for quantifying the impact of silicate structure on flux viscosity.

Profiling inclusion characteristics in submerged arc welded metals of EH36 shipbuilding steel treated by CaF2-TiO2 fluxes

Xiaobo Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated inclusions in EH36 shipbuilding steel submerged arc welded with CaF2-TiO2 fluxes. The inclusions were found to be mainly of a complex Ti-containing type, with an increase in Ti content and a reduction in Al and Mn content with increasing TiO2 content. The size distribution of inclusions followed a log-normal pattern, with frequency peaks ranging from 0.3 to 0.4 μm. The number density and volume fraction of inclusions showed a definite increasing trend, which was attributed to the uptake of O from 110 to 210 ppm enabled by TiO2 decomposition.

Mechanisms of bulk and surface diffusion in metallic glasses determined from molecular dynamics simulations

Ajay Annamareddy et al.

Summary: The bulk and surface dynamics of Cu50Zr50 metallic glass were studied using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The research found differences in dynamics between the surface and bulk during cooling, but their behaviors were very similar at their respective glass transition temperatures. The study also revealed a cage and jump mechanism dominating individual atom motion in the glassy state, with differences in activation energies for bulk and surface diffusion mainly attributed to cage-breaking barriers.

Toward revealing full atomic picture of nanoindentation deformation mechanisms in Li2O-2SiO2 glass-ceramics

Binghui Deng et al.

Summary: Glass-ceramics exhibit a significantly different plastic deformation behavior under sharp contact loading compared to glasses, with nanocrystalline phase dictating the shape of the plastic zone. Shear flow primarily nucleates and propagates along interfaces before transferring to surrounding glass and nanocrystals, contributing to energy dissipation and deformation deconcentration, and ultimately enhancing fracture toughness and inhibiting catastrophic crack propagation. Extensive discussions on LS2 nanocrystal aspect ratio, location, and orientation with respect to the indenter provide insights into surface damage behaviors of glass-ceramics in real applications.

Effect of MnO content on slag structure and properties under different basicity conditions: A molecular dynamics study

Shufang Ma et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes molecular dynamics to simulate the local structural order, oxygen bond network, and transportation characteristics of the slag system under different basicity conditions, studying the influence of MnO on properties such as viscosity, liquidus temperature, and enthalpy. It was found that increasing MnO content under high basicity conditions accelerates the depolymerization of the slag structure. Additionally, the increase in basicity and MnO content leads to an increase in the total self-diffusion coefficient of each atom but also increases the viscosity of the slag.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Melt Structure Properties of CaO-Al2O3-Na2O Slag

Xiaobo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of Na ions on the structure properties of CaO-Al2O3-Na2O slag. The substitution of Ca2+ ions with Na+ ions stabilizes the structure of the AlO4 tetrahedron and enhances the charge compensation ability while weakening the network modification ability as more Na+ ions replace Ca2+ ions. The transformation of weak non-bridge oxygen (NBO) structures to strong bridge oxygen (BO) structures in the melt contributes to the increase in macroscopic viscosity in slag with high Al content.
