Interfacial layers between ion and water detected by terahertz spectroscopy

Abhishek K. Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, aqueous chloride solutions of five monovalent cations were investigated using terahertz spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that ions modify the behavior of water molecules and form interfacial layers with distinct properties. Small cations were shown to have a significant impact on the water dynamics and increase the population of weakly coordinated water at the ion-water interface.

Magnesium Contact Ions Stabilize the Tertiary Structure of Transfer RNA: Electrostatics Mapped by Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectra and Theoretical Simulations

Jakob Schauss et al.

Summary: Interactions between ions and hydrated RNA are crucial for defining the RNA structure, particularly its tertiary structure. Contact ion pairs of magnesium and phosphate groups in local water shells stabilize the tertiary structure of tRNA by balancing phosphate-phosphate repulsion and inducing reorientations of water molecules.

Accelerated Vibrational Energy Relaxation of Water in Alkaline Environments

Roberto Cota et al.

Summary: In aqueous NaOH solutions, hydrated hydroxide ions introduce an additional relaxation channel for the vibrational relaxation of OD vibrations of HDO molecules. This additional path involves resonant energy transfer of the excited OD vibration to OH stretch vibrations of hydrated OH- complexes, constituting an efficient mechanism for dissipation of OD vibrational energy. The Forster energy transfer is characterized by a Forster radius of 2.8 +/- 0.2 angstrom, with the accepting OH stretch vibrations showing rapid subsequent relaxation.

Coordination Sphere of Lanthanide Aqua Ions Resolved with Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Richard C. Shiery et al.

Summary: By utilizing first-principles molecular dynamics simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure experiments, we were able to measure the symmetry of hydrating waters around lanthanide Ln(3+) aqua ions, revealing a dynamically symmetrically disordered first coordination shell characteristic of most lanthanides.
