Recent advances in applications of hybrid natural polymers as adsorbent for perfluorinated compounds removal - review paper

Aiza Farhani Zakaria et al.

Summary: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are carcinogens that are highly chemically stable and have high surface activity. They have been widely used in the manufacturing industry, but their contamination poses a significant threat to the environment and human health. This review paper explores the feasibility of removing PFCs from polluted aqueous solutions using natural polymer-based adsorbents and discusses the adsorption behavior and mechanisms. The study also compares the performance of single-based and multiple-based adsorbents and investigates the effects of various factors on adsorption performance.

Bioinspired Superspreading Surface: From Essential Mechanism to Application Published as part of the Accounts of Chemical Research special issue Self-Assembled Nanomaterials

Weining Miao et al.

Summary: The dynamic behavior of liquids on surfaces has attracted wide attention from researchers, especially the superspreading surface which has been extensively studied and applied in various fields. However, the traditional equilibrium contact angle cannot fully depict the dynamic spreading process of liquids. In this paper, the concept of superspreading is formally proposed, and superspreading time and the curve of superspreading radius are recommended as indicators to quantify its performance. By learning from nature and understanding the fundamental mechanism, high-performance superspreading surfaces can be designed. Various methods have been utilized to modify surface composition and structure, leading to practical applications in film fabrication, antibiofouling, separation, and heat dissipation. Challenges and future development trends in the superspreading field are also discussed.

Constructing Scalable Superhydrophobic Membranes for Ultrafast Water-Oil Separation

Xi Quan Cheng et al.

Summary: A simple method of coaxial electrospinning was proposed to manufacture superhydrophobic membranes for ultrafast separation of water-in-oil emulsions. By designing asymmetric composite membranes with selective layers, the mass transfer resistance was reduced, resulting in high separation efficiency and permeance. The manufactured membrane showed strong promise in separation of water-in-oil emulsions, with a large size, continuous production, and potential for further enlargement.
