Optimal information exchange in contests

Zhuoqiong Chen

Summary: This study explores the optimal exchange of private information in a two-player all-pay auction contest with independent private binary values, where the informativeness of signals affects the symmetry of equilibrium and players' expected payoff. Optimal signals can induce efficient allocation through an information-rent channel when players are sufficiently heterogeneous, or asymmetric contests through an unlevel-playing-field channel when players are sufficiently homogeneous. Regulators should punish information exchange among homogeneous players while imposing no restrictions with heterogeneous players to ensure efficient allocation.
