NaNbO3-CaTiO3 lead-free relaxor antiferroelectric ceramics featuring giant energy density, high energy efficiency and power density

Aiwen Xie et al.

Summary: This study found that introducing CaTiO3 into NaNbO3 helps to enhance the energy storage performance of lead-free antiferroelectric ceramics. By controlling the content of CT, a gradual transformation between AFE microdomains and AFE nanodomains can be achieved, allowing polarization saturation to be reached at a relatively high electric field.

Large (anti)ferrodistortive NaNbO3-based lead-free relaxors: Polar nanoregions embedded in ordered oxygen octahedral tilt matrix

He Qi et al.

Summary: Relaxor ferroelectric perovskites have regained attention due to the exploration of polar nanoregions' fine local structure, which is believed to be the root of their unique electrical properties. A new type of low-tolerance relaxor ferroelectric has been discovered in lead-free perovskites based on NaNbO3, featuring both cation displacement and large oxygen octahedral tilt, with anomalous microdomains. These findings break the limits of classical relaxor ferroelectric models. Atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that the microdomains are formed by long-range ordered oxygen octahedral tilt, while embedded nanoregions with inhomogeneous polarization vectors explain the relaxor behavior. Based on this unique ferroelectric-improper ferroelastic state, delayed polarization saturation can be achieved under a strong electric field, offering potential for excellent energy storage properties. The results of this work not only introduce a new type of relaxor ferroelectrics but also call for a reconstruction of relaxor models and theories established over half a century.
