Ferroelectricity and negative piezoelectric coefficient in orthorhombic phase pure ZrO2 thin films

Jose P. B. Sliva et al.

Summary: A new method for stabilizing ferroelectric o-ZrO2 films with negative piezoelectric coefficient is demonstrated by growing -8nm thick films using ion-beam sputtering. The films on (011)-Nb:SrTiO3 showed oriented o-phase and exhibited ferroelectric behavior, while films on (001)-Nb:SrTiO3 showed mixed m and o-phases with inferior ferroelectric properties. Density functional theory calculations support the experimental findings and explain the negative piezoelectric coefficient.

Influence of the Ozone Dose Time during Atomic Layer Deposition on the Ferroelectric and Pyroelectric Properties of 45 nm-Thick ZrO2 Films

Bohan Xu et al.

Summary: Over a decade ago, ferroelectricity was discovered in doped HfO2 thin films. In this work, undoped ZrO2 thin films were synthesized with different ozone dose times, and their ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties were studied. The results showed that the in-plane tensile stress and oxygen vacancy content significantly influenced the ferroelectric and pyroelectric behavior in the ZrO2 thin films. The low thermal budget for processing these films is valuable for semiconductor back-end-of-line processes.

ZrO2 Matrix Toughened Ceramic Material-Strength and Toughness

Bin Qi et al.

Summary: ZrO2 ceramic has great potential for development due to its high hardness, good thermochemical stability, desirable biocompatibility, and unique stress-activated tetragonal to monoclinic transformation toughening. However, its brittleness limits its applications. Efforts have been made worldwide to improve the toughness of ZrO2 ceramic materials. This review discusses the effects of phase composition, stabilizer, grain size, and sintering method on the fracture toughness of ZrO2 ceramic. The mechanisms of phase transformation toughening, dopant toughening, and lamellar ceramic toughening are summarized, as well as the applications of toughened ZrO2-based materials in structural ceramics, coatings, and biomaterials.
