Room-temperature direct bonding of ZrO2 ceramic and SiCP/Al composite using ultrasonic waves

H. J. Dong et al.

Summary: Direct bonding of ZrO2 ceramic and SiCP/2A14 composite was achieved using ultrasonic waves at room temperature within a few seconds. A void-free amorphous Al2O3 interphase layer with a thickness of 60-70 nm was formed between the two materials, which was attributed to enhanced diffusion of O and Al atoms caused by increased defect density from ultrasonic vibration. The maximum average shear strength of the joints reached 36.48 MPa.

Ultrasonic-assisted wetting and soldering of AlN ceramic by using a nonactive solder (Sn9Zn) in air

Shu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, AlN ceramic was successfully wetted and joined with nonactive Sn9Zn eutectic solder assisted by ultrasonication in air. The effect of ultrasonic time on joint formation was investigated, with results showing that a defect-free joint can be obtained at 5 seconds of ultrasonic time. The shear strength of the joint increased as the ultrasonic treatment time increased, with more AlN ceramic particles entering the solder and acting as the reinforcing phase with prolonged ultrasonic time.

Summary: The presence of Zr and Ti improves the wettability of the alloys on yttria-stabilized zirconia, with the wetting process controlled by interface adsorption. Anomalous temperature dependence was observed in the final wettability, as increased temperature led to decreased adsorption.

On the governing fragmentation mechanism of primary intermetallics by induced cavitation

Abhinav Priyadarshi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the fragmentation process of primary Al3Zr intermetallics in aluminium alloys using nano-indentation experiments and high-speed imaging. Results showed that the fragmentation mechanism was mainly caused by shock waves emitted from collapsing bubbles. Instantaneous fragmentation was observed from single bubble collapse, while sono-fragmentation led to fatigue loading and eventual brittle failure due to propagating shock waves.

Metallization of Al2O3 ceramic with Mg by friction stir spot welding

Hirosuke Sonomura et al.

Summary: The surfaces of Al2O3 ceramic plates were metallized using a friction stir spot welding method, showing good adhesive strength. Investigation revealed the formation of a microcrystalline MgO layer at the interface, leading to strong adhesion. Bonding two metallized Al2O3 ceramic plates together at 1100 °C under vacuum resulted in a strong cross tensile strength, indicating strong adhesion.

Experimental approach to probe into mechanisms of high-temperature erosion of NbB2-ZrO2

Taraknath Maity et al.

Summary: This study investigates the high-temperature erosive wear mechanisms of spark plasma sintered NbB2-ZrO2 composite under different temperatures through experiments and microstructural analysis. The activation of dislocation plasticity during erosion at high temperatures plays a key role in erosion resistance, while substantial material loss occurs during erosion at room temperature.

Enhanced wettability in ultrasonic-assisted soldering to glass substrates

Caleb Wilson et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic-assisted soldering enhances the metal-to-glass bond by increasing wettability of the solder line. Experimental results show that wettability is influenced by ultrasonic power and solder tip height, due to acoustic radiation pressure. A capillary shape equation incorporating acoustic radiation pressure can accurately predict solder bead geometry.
