Pre-culture of human mesenchymal stromal cells in spheroids facilitates chondrogenesis at a low total cell count upon emb e dding in biomaterials to generate cartilage microtissues

Flurina Staubli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of embedding hMSC spheroids in biomaterials to promote cell differentiation. The results show that embedding hMSC spheroids in THA-Col hydrogels induces chondrogenic differentiation, with lower THA content leading to a more pronounced chondrogenic phenotype. The study suggests that pre-culturing hMSC spheroids at low cell count can be a promising approach for cartilage tissue engineering.

Functionalized Hydrogels for Articular Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Liangbin Zhou et al.

Summary: Articular cartilage (AC) is a flexible connective tissue located on the bone surface in the joints. AC defects are common in physically active individuals. Functionalized hydrogels have emerged as promising substitutes for damaged cartilage in AC repair due to their favorable properties. This article introduces the composition, structure, and function of AC and its defects, and reviews the design and fabrication of functionalized hydrogels for AC repair.

Solubilized Cartilage ECM Facilitates the Recruitment and Chondrogenesis of Endogenous BMSCs in Collagen Scaffolds for Enhancing Microfracture Treatment

Yan Lu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that functionalizing collagen scaffolds with porcine decellularized extracellular matrix can promote neocartilage regeneration. Results showed that the solution form of ECM performed better in cell recruitment, proliferation, and chondrogenesis, quickly providing a favorable chondrogenic microenvironment for endogenous BMSCs.

Optimization of hyaluronic acid-tyramine/silk-fibroin composite hydrogels for cartilage tissue engineering and delivery of anti-inflammatory and anabolic drugs

Reihane Ziadlou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to formulate injectable hydrogels for drug delivery and cartilage tissue engineering by combining hyaluronic acid-tyramine (HA-Tyr) with regenerated silk-fibroin (SF) solutions. The HA20/SF80 hydrogel showed superior chondrogenic effects and mechanical properties for cartilage tissue engineering applications, making it a promising biomaterial for osteoarthritis treatment.
