Tracing the Effects of Calcium, Stannum, and Zinc Additions on the Creep Resistance of Mg-Al-Based Alloys

Tao Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of Ca, Sn, and Zn additions on the creep resistance of Mg-Al-based alloys at 453 K were systematically investigated. The highest yield strength was observed in Mg-6Al-1Zn (AZ61) alloy, while the best creep resistance was achieved in Mg-6Al-1Ca (AX61) alloy, followed by Mg-6Al-1Zn (AZ61) and Mg-6Al-1Sn (AT61) alloys. It is recommended to add Ca element into Mg-Al-based alloys to improve creep resistance by controlling solution strengthening and dislocation morphologies.

Achieving high strength and creep resistance of a Mg-13Gd-6Y-0.2Zr alloy forging fabricated by isothermal forging and artificial aging

Zijian Zhang et al.

Summary: A Mg-13Gd-6Y-0.2Zr alloy forging with excellent creep resistance and high ultimate tensile strength was fabricated for aerospace applications. The forging exhibited a steady-state creep rate of 2.26x10-9 /s at 200 degrees C and a stress of 60 MPa. The strength enhancement was attributed to grain refinement during isothermal forging and the formation of uniformly distributed beta' phase during aging.

Compressive creep behavior and microstructural evolution of sand-cast and peak-aged Mg-12Gd-0.4Zr alloy at 250 degrees C

Hui Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the compressive creep behavior of Mg-12Gd-0.4Zr alloys at 250 degrees C. The presence of beta' and beta'(F) precipitate chains in Mg-Gd-Zr alloys forms a honeycomb-like structure, improving the creep resistance. However, the creep performance of the sand-cast alloy is weakened by the occurrence of weakly strengthening beta(1) precipitates. On the other hand, the creep resistance of the peak-aged alloy is enhanced by the formation of precipitate-free zones and the arrested cross-slip of basal and pyramidal dislocations.

Diffusion-induced stress concentrations in diffusional creep

S. Kovacevic et al.

Summary: The lattice continuum formulation for diffusional creep is implemented into the computational framework based on the finite difference method for space and the predictor-corrector algorithm for time discretization, to solve the coupled elasticity-diffusion problem with moving boundaries. The numerical results show good correspondence to analytical predictions for idealized diffusional Nabarro-Herring creep. Significantly lower steadystate strain rates were computed for nucleation-controlled creep. These results demonstrate the ability of the present model to reproduce the stress and grain size dependence of the steady-state strain creep rates.

Effect of aging treatment on the microstructure, fracture toughness and fracture behavior of the extruded Mg-7Gd-2Y-1Zn-0.5Zr alloy

Z. K. Ji et al.

Summary: A commercial scale Mg-7Gd-2Y-1Zn-0.5Zr alloy extrusion rod with high yield strength and fracture toughness was fabricated through direct-chill casting, hot extrusion, and aging treatment. The as-extruded alloy had a bimodal microstructure with LPSO phase, and twinning in coarse deformed grains improved fracture toughness. Precipitation of beta' phase in peak-aged alloy enhanced strength but changed fracture mechanism to quasi-cleavage.

Microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanisms of Mg-6Gd-4Y-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy during hot spinning and aging treatment

Xueze Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the optimized spinning temperature range of Mg-6Gd-4Y-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy and the microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanisms during hot spinning and aging treatment. The research shows that the multi-pass heating and deformation during hot spinning influence the microstructure and the dominant strengthening mechanisms include solid solution strengthening, grain boundary strengthening, and shearing strengthening. The precipitation of gamma' phase affects the precipitation density of beta' phase and reduces the age hardening response in spun tube compared to extruded alloy.

The effect of Zr on dynamic recrystallization during ECAP processing of Mg-Y-RE alloys

P. Minarik et al.

Summary: The addition of small amounts of zirconium in magnesium alloys containing yttrium and rare-earth elements was found to promote the formation of small secondary phase particles, leading to finer grains, denser distribution, more active grain nucleation processes, suppressed grain growth, and ultimately smaller grain size. This effect was independent of the initial microstructural condition and resulted in improved material strength as demonstrated through various microscopy techniques and mechanical testing. This study shows that the microstructure and texture of MgRE alloys can be effectively tailored by small Zr additions.

Thermodynamics and kinetics of hydriding and dehydriding reactions in Mg-based hydrogen storage materials

Qian Li et al.

Summary: Magnesium-based materials show promise as hydrogen storage candidates due to their high capacity, environmental friendliness, and high Clarke number characteristics. However, limited thermodynamic and kinetic properties have posed challenges for their engineering applications. Recent progress has focused on improving these properties through alloying, composite materials, and nanocrystallization, leading to enhanced hydrogen storage efficiency.

Effects of Yttrium Content on the Three-Dimensional Compressive Creep Anisotropy of Mg-Y Alloys

Yuxiu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the compressive creep behaviors of different Mg alloys at 523K were systematically investigated, showing a dependence on loading direction and an increase in creep resistance with higher Y content. The addition of Y also helped to reduce creep anisotropy and improve creep resistance, with dynamic precipitation strengthening further enhancing creep resistance in certain alloys.
