Impacts of Field and Laboratory Long-Term Aging on Asphalt Binders

Punit Singhvi et al.

Summary: Asphalt binder aging accelerates cracking of flexible pavement. This study aimed to select a laboratory aging protocol to represent field aging in Illinois. Extracted binders from field cores were tested for rheology and chemical characteristics. The double pressure-aging vessel (PAV) was identified as a suitable laboratory long-term aging protocol representing 8 to 12 years of field aging for flexible pavements.

On the sustainable use of recycled plastics in flexible asphalt pavements

Jianmin Ma et al.

Summary: Reusing plastic waste in asphalt for road construction has potential environmental and economic benefits. However, research has conflicting conclusions about its merits. This report presents test results on plastic-modified binders and mixtures, finding improved high temperature binder grades, but reduced strain tolerance in ductile failure. Modified mixes were less strain tolerant in comparison to unmodified mixes. Adjusting the base asphalt grade is proposed to accommodate more plastic and improve overall performance.

Laurent Steger et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of CaCl2 additions on the hydration of blended cements containing GGBS, showing that the addition of CaCl2 can increase the compressive strength, reduce pore space, and accelerate the hydration rate of GGBS in the blended cements. The onset of GGBS contribution and AFm precipitation were also affected by the presence of CaCl2 in the blends.

Comparative evaluation of ageing effects on the properties of regular and highly polymer modified asphalt binders

Carlos Rivera et al.

Summary: The use of polymer modified asphalt is increasing steadily due to the growing demands in asphalt pavements for higher loading. Higher dosages of polymer modification, known as highly or heavily modified asphalts (HiMA or HP), are now being used to enhance performance and durability of asphalt mixtures. Results show that HiMA asphalt exhibits better long-term mechanical performance in road projects compared to conventional polymer modified binders.

Chemo-rheological and morphology evolution of polymer modified bitumens under thermal oxidative and all-weather aging

Guoqiang Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal oxidative aging and all-weather aging of SBS-modified bitumen, RPE-modified bitumen, and base bitumen. Results showed that polymer degradation and bitumen oxidation play different leading roles in various aging stages. All-weather aging had a more pronounced impact on the chemical and rheological properties of base bitumen and RPE bitumen compared to long-term aging.

Summary: The study investigated the aging mechanism of HPMBs with different formulations, revealing that both polymer and sulfur contribute to improving rheological properties and aging resistance of HPMBs, but excessive polymer and sulfur may not be beneficial. Additionally, potential bias should be considered when using GPC curves and FTIR spectra to evaluate chemical properties changes of HPMBs during aging.

Use of linear amplitude sweep test as a damage tolerance or fracture test to determine the optimum content of asphalt rejuvenator

Babak Asadi et al.

Summary: A procedure using the LAS test has been developed to determine the optimum rejuvenator content for restoring aged asphalt binders, showing that higher contents of rejuvenators are needed to restore the cracking behavior of the original binders. The linear relationship between the integrated damage-fatigue-fracture indicator and rejuvenator content is used to determine the optimal content, revealing the superiority of aromatic extract rejuvenator over waste cooking oil at higher contents in restoring properties.

Variable-temperature Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy study of asphalt binders from the SHRP Materials Reference Library

Haibo Ding et al.

Summary: A study on the effects of temperature and oxidative aging on asphalt binders showed that spectral intensity consistently increased at lower temperatures, with peak positions shifting to lower wavenumbers and higher wavenumbers depending on the temperature range. These shifts were found to weaken or enhance by oxidation, while the wax precipitation temperature (WPT) tended to decrease after mild oxidation but increase after more extensive aging. No clear trends were found for the effect of oxidative aging on solid wax content as measured by VT-FTIR.
