Synthesis of magnesium aluminate spinel-An overview

Biswajit Baruah et al.

Summary: Magnesium aluminate spinel (MAS) is a ceramic material with unique beneficial properties. Despite initial commercial challenges, MAS has become commercially accepted due to its environmental friendliness and superior properties, substituting magnesia-chrome refractories. The solid-oxide reaction route is the most popular method for MAS synthesis from an industrial perspective, thanks to its ease of bulk production and low cost.

Effect of Y2O3 content on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of reaction sintered magnesium aluminate spinel

Biswajit Baruah et al.

Summary: Dense magnesium aluminate spinels with favorable densification and improved mechanical properties can be developed by adding 2 wt% Y2O3 through a solid-state reaction sintering method. The addition of Y2O3 promotes densification of the spinels due to the similar crystal structure with yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG). Microstructural investigation shows that Y2O3-containing spinel batches have a controlled grain structure. The Y2O3-doped spinel batches sintered at 1650°C exhibit better mechanical properties than the undoped spinels.

Effects of different additives on properties of magnesium aluminate Spinel-Periclase castable

Shaoyang Wang et al.

Summary: Bauxite and alumina-based spinels were used as aggregates, and sintered magnesia fine powder, calcium aluminate cement, microsilica, and activated alpha-Al2O3 were used as matrices in the study of magnesium aluminate spinel-periclase castables. The addition of alumina powder, analytically pure zinc oxide, and analytically pure zirconia promoted the sintering and improved the high-temperature properties, including thermal shock resistance and slag resistance, of the castables. The improved thermal shock resistance and slag resistance were attributed to the additives.

Preparation and performance optimization of MgAl2O4 spinel materials by single-step reaction sintering

Wenyu Zan et al.

Summary: In this study, MgAl2O4 spinel materials were synthesized using a single-step reaction sintering method. The effects of (MgO + Al2O3) content, molding pressure, and YSZ additive on the properties of the material were investigated. The results showed that increasing (MgO + Al2O3) content and molding pressure favored the formation of the second MgAl2O4 spinel but also increased the apparent porosity. YSZ addition induced defects and improved the sintering and mechanical properties. The optimal material was obtained with the addition of 1 wt% YSZ, 80 wt% of (MgO + Al2O3), and molding at 200 MPa, followed by sintering at 1600 degrees C for 2 h. The material exhibited high strength retention and comprehensive performance after thermal shock.

Comparison study of slag corrosion resistance of MgO-MgAl2O4, MgO-CaO and MgO-C refractories under electromagnetic field

Xin-ming Ren et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the corrosion and penetration of MgO-based refractories were accelerated under the influence of an electromagnetic field (EMF), making the molten slag easier to penetrate into the refractories. Despite MgO-C refractories showing no significant advantage in slag resistance, as EMF hindered the formation of a dense protective layer, they are still considered the most promising slag line material among MgO-MgAl2O4, MgO-CaO, and MgO-C refractories.
