Improving circular economy by assessing the use of fly ash as a replacement of lime pastes reducing its environmental impact

Juan F. Saldarriaga et al.

Summary: In this study, bituminous coal, sugar cane, untreated and pretreated hazardous waste ashes were tested as supplementary cement materials. The reactivity of these materials was analyzed, and it was found that sugarcane and untreated hazardous waste ashes are suitable for the production of construction supplies. The E-factor analysis showed that replacing fly ash contributes to the circular economy, reducing solid waste and improving environmental quality.

Production of nanopore structure bio-adsorbent from wood waste through a self-sustained carbonization process for landfill leachate treatment

Mohd Hafif Samsudin et al.

Summary: The discharge of leachate from landfills poses a serious risk to water sources. This study explores the use of biomass-based adsorbents as a substitute for activated carbon in treating landfill leachate. The results show that biochar has a satisfactory performance in removing pollutants from landfill leachate.

Simultaneous adsorption and biodegradation of trichloroethylene occurs in a biochar packed column treating contaminated landfill leachate

Alma Siggins et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential for environmental micro-organisms to establish a TCE-dechlorinating biofilm on biochar, using a packed column system containing herbal pomace and spruce biochar. The results showed that biochar was capable of supporting a dechlorinating biofilm to promote bioremediation of TCE, with TCE removal rates greater than 99.7% observed.

Efficiency assessment of municipal landfill leachate treatment during advanced oxidation process (AOP) with biochar adsorption (BC)

Anna Kwarciak-Kozlowska et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of advanced oxidation and biochar adsorption in treating landfill leachate. The results showed that under specific conditions, these methods could effectively reduce COD and TOC levels, as well as decrease the toxicity of leachate, indicating their potential for environmental purification.
