Anti-social behaviour and economic decision-making: Panel experimental evidence in the wake of COVID-19

Paul M. Lohmann et al.

Summary: Using unique experimental panel data from China, collected before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, this study systematically examines the acute impact of a public health crisis on antisocial behavior and economic decision-making. By exploiting geographical variation in virus exposure and longitudinal experiments, the researchers find that participants who were more intensely exposed to the virus outbreak exhibited more antisocial behavior, while other economic and social preferences remained largely stable. This finding is robust to multiple hypothesis testing and a similar, though less pronounced, pattern is observed when alternative measures of virus exposure, reflecting societal concern and sentiment, are used.

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This article presents a two-sector model to evaluate the prospects of China's future economic growth. The simulations suggest that the rapid aging of the population and the decrease in rural migration will significantly slow down urban labor force and economic growth. However, relaxing labor market segmentation and financial constraints can delay this process of growth deceleration.
