Seismic stratigraphy of the north-westernmost area of the Malta Plateau (Sicily Channel): The Middle Pleistocene-Holocene sedimentation in a tidally influenced shelf

Simona Todaro et al.

Summary: This study presents a seismic-stratigraphic analysis of sub-bottom profiles in the northwesternmost area of the Malta Plateau in order to understand the depositional mechanisms for the upper Quaternary sequences. The results indicate that subsidence and sea-level fluctuations controlled the depositional mechanisms, resulting in the formation of seismic units and different types of sediments. The absence of a lowstand prograding wedge during the Last Glacial Maximum in the Malta Plateau is attributed to the lack of an effective shelf edge. The ramp morphology of the plateau allowed for a rapid drowning and the preservation of transgressive deposits. Highstand deposits were observed as prograding bodies and classified as infralittoral prograding wedge.

Shear-Velocity Structure and Dynamics Beneath the Sicily Channel and Surrounding Regions of the Central Mediterranean Inferred From Seismic Surface Waves

M. R. Agius et al.

Summary: The evolution of the Sicily Channel Rift Zone (SCRZ) is believed to be a response to regional tectonic stresses from the Calabrian subduction system. It is unclear whether the rifting is caused by far-field extensional stresses or active mantle upwelling. Through measurements and modeling, it is found that variations in crustal S-wave velocities coincide with topographic and tectonic features, and a thin mantle lithosphere and low-velocity zone exist beneath the SCRZ.

Evaluating the distribution of priority benthic habitats through a remotely operated vehicle to support conservation measures off Linosa Island (Sicily Channel, Mediterranean Sea)

Beatrice Romagnoli et al.

Summary: Explorations using remotely operated vehicles in the Mediterranean deep sea showed rich habitats on the sea bed with high biodiversity. This study focused on exploring the sea bed off Linosa Island to characterize the benthic assemblages and discovered diverse habitats, suggesting the need for more protection and conservation efforts in the area.

Growth and geomorphic evolution of the Ustica volcanic complex at the Africa-Europe plate margin (Tyrrhenian Sea)

Attilio Sulli et al.

Summary: This study presents a morpho-structural analysis of the submarine sector of the Ustica volcanic edifice, providing insights into the geological processes and geodynamic activity in the Central Mediterranean. It reveals the composition of the volcano, distribution of geomorphological elements, and interaction of volcanic, tectonic, oceanographic, and gravity processes, contributing to a better understanding of the area's geological history.

Depositional mechanism of the upper Pliocene-Pleistocene shelf-slope system of the western Malta Plateau (Sicily Channel)

S. Todaro et al.

Summary: A high resolution seismic stratigraphic study of the western edge of the Malta Plateau in the central Mediterranean Sea was conducted to reconstruct the depositional mechanisms of the shelf-slope system. The study revealed a clinoform prograding system that constitutes the internal structure of a sedimentary shelf developed in a ramp with bathymetries not exceeding 200 m since the end of the Messinian salinity crisis.

First Evidence of Contourite Drifts in the North-Western Sicilian Active Continental Margin (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)

Daniele Spatola et al.

Summary: An integrated study of geomorphology and seismo-stratigraphy in the north-western Sicilian continental margin revealed the presence of five contourite drifts, with EM1a,b and EM2 identified as elongated mounded drifts and EM2 and EM3a,b interpreted as sheeted drifts. These drifts were mostly formed during the Holocene, influenced by the interaction of LIW and TDW, playing a significant role in shaping the continental margin since the late Pleistocene-Holocene.
