Neuromuscular Junction Dysfunction in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Sagar Verma et al.

Summary: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disorder characterized by degeneration of motor neurons and potential early pathology at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). However, the events triggering NMJ disassembly in ALS remain unclear.

Quantitative MRI Differentiates Electromyography Severity Grades of Denervated Muscle in Neuropathy of the Brachial Plexus

Ek T. Tan et al.

Summary: The study found that quantitative T-2 and AFD values can reflect the differences in EMG grades in assessing muscle denervation. qMRI can strongly predict abnormal MUR or denervation, but has moderate accuracy in predicting specific grades.

Neurovascular unit pathology is observed very early in disease progression in the mutant SOD1G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Masaaki Yoshikawa et al.

Summary: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness and atrophy. Pathological changes in ALS not only affect motor neurons, but also occur in the neurovascular units. These changes happen prior to neuromuscular junction denervation.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Eva L. Feldman et al.

Summary: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal CNS neurodegenerative disease, lacks optimal management strategies. Improved understanding of clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and diagnostic criteria has not yet translated into direct patient benefit. However, the concept of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as a complex syndrome is already influencing clinical practice.

Quantitative assessment of brachial plexus MRI for the diagnosis of chronic inflammatory neuropathies

Marieke H. J. van Rosmalen et al.

Summary: This study developed a quantitative approach to assess abnormalities on MRI of the brachial plexus in CIDP and MMN patients, finding larger nerve root sizes compared to controls with optimal reliability in coronal measurements. The AUC for measurements at G(0) was 0.78 and at G(1) was 0.81, suggesting MRI can serve as an important additional diagnostic tool.

Global versus individual muscle segmentation to assess quantitative MRI-based fat fraction changes in neuromuscular diseases

Harmen Reyngoudt et al.

Summary: In this study, different segmentation approaches including global muscle segmentation were compared for evaluating disease progression in various neuromuscular disorders. The global muscle segmentation showed high sensitivity to change in fat fraction in most investigated disorders. Compared to individual muscle drawing, global muscle segmentation was found to be a faster and easier approach to assess disease progression, while individual muscle ROIs are still important for exploring selective muscle involvement.

Early Axonal Dysfunction of the Peripheral Nervous System Influences Disease Progression of ALS: Evidence From Clinical Neuroelectrophysiology

Huiyan Yu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of CMAP-12 amplitude for survival in ALS patients. Results indicated that decreased CMAP-12 amplitude was associated with shorter survival time and early axonal dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system may accelerate disease progression in ALS.
