Non-contrast assessment of blood-brain barrier permeability to water in mice: An arterial spin labeling study at cerebral veins

Zhiliang Wei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a non-contrast arterial-spin-labeling (ASL) based MRI technique to estimate BBB permeability to water in mice. By determining the relative fraction of labeled water spins that were exchanged into the brain tissue as opposed to those that remained in the cerebral veins, we estimated indices of global BBB permeability to water. The proposed method may provide new avenues for preclinical research on pathophysiological mechanisms of brain diseases and therapeutic trials in animal models.

Neurovascular unit pathology is observed very early in disease progression in the mutant SOD1G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Masaaki Yoshikawa et al.

Summary: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness and atrophy. Pathological changes in ALS not only affect motor neurons, but also occur in the neurovascular units. These changes happen prior to neuromuscular junction denervation.

Glymphatic Cerebrospinal Fluid and Solute Transport Quantified by

Helene Benveniste et al.

Summary: In the past decade, significant progress has been made in understanding fluid and solute transport in the CNS, thanks to advancements in imaging technology and computational fluid dynamics analysis. This paper reviews the technical aspects of DCE-MRI and Gd-based tracers for tracking glymphatic transport in the CNS, providing new insights into biophysical forces governing solute transport and drainage pathways.

Microvascular degeneration occurs before plaque onset and progresses with age in 3xTg AD mice

Dominic D. Quintana et al.

Summary: The study established a time-course for the structural changes and degeneration of the angioarchitecture in AD, showing early morphological abnormalities and degeneration of microvascular networks in 3xTg AD mice. Analysis of the hippocampus and cortical subregions revealed subregion-dependent microvascular degeneration with onset and progression.
