Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles-loaded thermoresponsive poly(N-vinylcaprolactam)-g-galactosylated chitosan microparticles: investigation of physicochemical, morphological and magnetic properties

Serap Durkut

Summary: In this study, a novel thermoresponsive magnetic hydrogel microparticle system was developed by combining magnetic nanoparticles with poly(N-vinylcaprolactam)-g-galactosylated chitosan hybrid hydrogel. The Fe3O4@PNVCL-g-GC microparticles were synthesized and characterized. The Fe3O4@PNVCL-g-GC microparticles exhibited a size distribution of 390-530 nm at room temperature and 220-340 nm above the LCST. In vitro ISO analyses confirmed the cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility of the Fe3O4@PNVCL-g-GC microparticles. In conclusion, these biocompatible, temperature- and magnetic-responsive microparticles have potential applications in controlled release systems, in situ bioactive agents carrier, and anti-cancer therapy.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

Cyclodextrin and folate functionalized polymer nanocarriers: Chain length dependent properties

Archana Sumohan Pillai et al.

Summary: We reported the synthesis and characterization of a series of β-cyclodextrin and folate-tethered poly(ethylene glycol) nanocarriers with different spacer chain lengths. The nanoparticles made of polymers of different chain lengths exhibited distinct size, morphology, and drug encapsulation mode. The nanoparticles with poly(ethylene glycol) spacer molecular weights of 9,000 and 12,000 showed high encapsulation efficiencies and effective anticancer activity. Moreover, we found a clear relationship between the anticancer activity of the nanoparticles and the polymer chain length-dependent morphological features, drug encapsulation mode, and the controlled release of the drug. This study sheds new light on designing polymeric nanocarriers for effective drug delivery.
