Towards an engineering tool for the prediction of running ductile fractures in CO2 pipelines

Hans Langva Skarsvag et al.

Summary: A large network of high-pressure transport pipelines is necessary for the deployment of CO2 capture and storage (CCS). The assessment of pipeline designs for running ductile fracture (RDF) is crucial. The Battelle two-curve method (BTCM), commonly used for RDF in natural gas pipelines, is proven to be non-conservative for CO2. This study proposes an improved material curve and a method for calculating crack-tip pressure, leading to better accuracy in predicting RDF in CO2 pipelines.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of gas dispersion in complex facilities using Kit Fox field experiments: Validation and statistical evaluation

Narjes Hemati Alam et al.

Summary: Gas release and dispersion are major concerns in the chemical industry. Models and commercial packages have been developed to predict gas dispersion behavior and concentration. Computational fluid dynamics can simulate gas dispersion in complex areas, but validation with experimental data is necessary. This study simulated trials of the Kit Fox field experiment using CFD, considering various scenarios and parameters. The results showed that the simulation outcomes depend on the chosen scenario, location of intended points, and release type.

CO2 Pipeline risk assessment and comparison for the midcontinent United States

Andrew Duguid et al.

Summary: A comprehensive quantitative risk assessment was conducted for CO2 transportation networks in the Midcontinent United States, showing lower risks compared to other pipeline types. The assessment discussed risks operators may encounter using different lengths of conceptual pipelines and utilized data from safety administration agencies to determine likelihood and severity values leading to risk values. The assessment evaluated construction and operational risks, finding that pipeline length and leakage were factors affecting the risks.

Statistical analysis of incidents on onshore CO2 pipelines based on PHMSA database

Matteo Vitali et al.

Summary: The development of an integrated network for carbon dioxide management requires thorough consideration of all aspects, including pipeline transport safety. Due to limited operating experience with CO2 handling systems, statistical data from hydrocarbon pipelines are often used as a proxy. This study analyzes incident data from onshore CO2 pipelines in the US between 1985 and 2021 to estimate the failure rate for quantitative risk assessments, while acknowledging the limitations of the data.

Lin Teng et al.

Summary: In this study, a CFD model considering the phase change of water vapor was developed to evaluate cold CO2 dispersion, showing that the model is more accurate with water phase change considered. When applied in urban areas, the model with water vapor phase change resulted in varying degrees of CO2 concentration estimation bias.

Risks and Safety of CO2 Transport via Pipeline: A Review of Risk Analysis and Modeling Approaches for Accidental Releases

Matteo Vitali et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage is an effective strategy for reducing emissions in heavy industries and gas processing. Safe transport of carbon dioxide via pipelines is crucial for large-scale projects, but modeling for heavy gases like CO2 is more challenging. Research on dispersion modeling, phase changing issues, and equation of state is key for this topic.
