Calibration of Distributed Temperature Sensors Using Commercially Available SMF-28 Optical Fiber From 22 °C to 1000 °C

Joshua T. Jones et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method for temperature measurement of optical fibers using optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) and develops a correlation between spectral shift and temperature in the range from room temperature to 1000 degrees C. The relationship between spectral shift and temperature is characterized by a fourth-order polynomial, which is validated using SMF-28 optical fibers.

Distributed temperature profile in hydrogen flame measured by telecom fiber and its durability under flame by OFDR

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: The distributed temperature profile of a hydrogen flame was experimentally demonstrated for the first time using optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). The monitoring was done through a telecom fiber inside the flame, and the highest temperature was found to be on the sides of the center flame. The uniformity of temperature was studied by varying the distance between the fiber and tube entrance, and the largest uniform region was obtained. The durability of single-mode fiber under the flame was also investigated. The findings have important implications for high-temperature measurement using telecom fiber and OFDR.

Long Distance Distributed Strain Sensing in OFDR by BM3D-SAPCA Image Denoising

Ming Pan et al.

Summary: In this paper, a method for long distance distributed strain sensing in optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is presented, which uses image processing for denoising to enhance the performance of distributed sensing. The proposed method, BM3D-SAPCA, searches for similar 2D image blocks in 3D arrays and takes advantage of the high level of similitude and redundancy in the multidimensional information to denoise. Experimental results show that the BM3D-SAPCA method effectively suppresses noise and achieves a spatial resolution of 5 cm and strain resolution of 2 mu epsilon in distributed strain sensing.

Improving OFDR Distributed Fiber Sensing by Fibers With Enhanced Rayleigh Backscattering and Image Processing

Qirui Wang et al.

Summary: This article enhances the Rayleigh backscattering profile of optical fibers using a femtosecond laser direct writing technique to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for optical frequency domain reflectometry. The enhanced backscattering signals enable effectively distributed strain measurements using a low-cost tunable laser, demonstrating potential and limitations for OFDR-based distributed fiber sensors.

Effect of Weiss ring on peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements using SD-OCT

Min-Su Kim et al.

Summary: It was found that Weiss ring located near the optic disc can affect the measurement of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness, especially in the inferior quadrant and average values. Therefore, it is important to consider the presence of Weiss ring when analyzing pRNFL thickness.

Improvement of Strain Measurement Range via Image Processing Methods in OFDR System

Shuai Qu et al.

Summary: The performance of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) has been experimentally analyzed and compared with image processing methods to extend the strain measurement range up to 7000 microstrain with a 4 mm spatial resolution, overcoming limitations of traditional processing methods. Wavelet transform is discussed in detail to determine the suitable decomposition level in OFDR data processing scheme, providing a new idea to achieve wide strain measurement range in OFDR system.

Performance Study of a Zirconia-Doped Fiber for Distributed Temperature Sensing by OFDR at 800 °C

Patrick Bulot et al.

Summary: OFDR utilizes Rayleigh backscattering for temperature measurements, but errors may occur at high temperatures. Using fibers with femtosecond laser inscribed nanograting is a known solution to reduce correlation errors in temperature measurements at extremely high temperatures.
