Advances in mid-infrared spectroscopy enabled by supercontinuum laser sources

Ivan Zorin et al.

Summary: Supercontinuum sources are fiber-based pulsed laser systems that generate high power spectral densities across a wide spectral range. This review discusses the current state and perspectives of supercontinuum technology in mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. The article first explains the basic principles of supercontinuum sources and provides experimental analysis of their emission properties, such as power spectral densities, brightness levels, spectral stability, and beam quality. The authors identify the competitive advantages of supercontinuum sources over thermal sources or quantum cascade lasers in mid-IR spectroscopy. The unique features of supercontinuum radiation offer opportunities for improving established techniques and developing new analytical methods and instruments. The review concludes with a summary of recent advances and applications of supercontinuum sources in various mid-IR spectroscopy scenarios.

Broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in dispersion-engineered As2S3-silica nanospike waveguides pumped by 2.8 μm femtosecond laser

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reports the generation of broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum lasers using As2S3-silica nanospike hybrid waveguides, as well as the fabrication and investigation of linearly tapered millimeter-scale waveguides for the first time. These waveguides exhibit broader spectra, improved spectral coherence, long-term stability, and water resistance, offering an alternative route for generating broadband mid-IR supercontinua with applications in frequency metrology and molecular spectroscopy, especially in humid and aqueous environments.

All-fiber ultrafast amplifier at 1.9 μm based on thulium-doped normal dispersion fiber and LMA fiber compressor

Vasilii Voropaev et al.

Summary: The reduction of duration and increase in peak power of ultrashort pulses at a 1.9um wavelength are urgent tasks for all-fiber sources. A novel ultrafast all-fiber amplifier has been developed, generating stable ultrashort pulses with specific characteristics for potential wideband coherent supercontinuum sources in the mid-IR range.

Mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in soft-glass specialty optical fibers: A review

Than Singh Saini et al.

Summary: The mid-infrared region is important for the fundamental vibrations of many molecules, making it known as the "molecular fingerprint region." Tellurite and chalcogenide glasses are advantageous for mid-infrared super continuum generation due to their wide transparency window and high optical nonlinearities. Photonic crystal fibers with diverse geometries and materials enable supercontinuum generation in an broad spectral range.
