Summary: The Common Wasp has an annual nest cycle and the survival of adult queen wasps through winter dormancy is enabled through the deposition of triglycerides. By using micro-CT scans, it is possible to measure fat reserves semi-quantitatively. The venom in the venom gland of queen wasps has a lower X-ray attenuation value than the fat bodies, possibly due to its content of volatile pheromones. The micro-CT technique can also visualize other physiological and anatomical features of insects.
