Large quantities of small microplastics permeate the surface ocean to abyssal depths in the South Atlantic Gyre

Shiye Zhao et al.

Summary: This study surveys microplastics in the surface to near-sea floor waters of the remote South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre and discovers a high abundance of small microplastics (SMPs) with vertical and horizontal variations. The composition of SMPs differs from surface plastic debris, and SMPs have a more even vertical distribution and potentially longer residence times. This suggests that SMPs are a critical and underexplored constituent of the oceanic plastic inventory.

Concerning P450 Evolution: Structural Analyses Support Bacterial Origin of Sterol 14α-Demethylases

David C. Lamb et al.

Summary: Sterol biosynthesis in Methylococcus capsulatus involves a simplified pathway with the key step of sterol 14 alpha-demethylation catalyzed by CYP51. The structure of CYP51fx from M. capsulatus is the first of a bacterial sterol biosynthetic enzyme, suggesting a common evolutionary origin of eukaryotic and bacterial CYP51s. Bioinformatic analysis reveals the presence of CYP51 genes in over 1,000 bacteria, supporting the idea that early eukaryotes may have recruited CYP51 from bacterial sources.

Summary: This study focused on identifying polymer types and additive concentrations in plastic debris collected from the deep-sea of Sagami Bay, Japan and the West Pacific Ocean. The results showed that hazardous additives, including DEHP and BHT, were present in significant amounts within the plastic debris, highlighting the substantial chemical burden within plastic debris at abyssal depths of the ocean.

The cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily in cnidarians

Kirill Pankov et al.

Summary: The study annotated the CYPomes of four cnidarian genomes, identifying 155 functional CYPs and 90 fragments, involving 24 new CYP families and several subfamilies. Each species had significant expansions in clan 2 diversity, with H. vulgaris showing reduced diversity in clans 3 and mitochondrial clan, and potential candidates for xenobiotic metabolism and steroidogenesis were identified.

Whole genome sequencing of a snailfish from the Yap Trench (∼7,000 m) clarifies the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation to the deep sea

Yinnan Mu et al.

Summary: The study of the genome of Yap hadal snailfish provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of adaptation to extreme deep-sea environments, including positive selection and expansion of genes related to DNA repair, as well as the high trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) content contributing to protein stability. These genomic features are consistent with the adaptation to scarce food supply and darkness in the hadal environments.

Notes on age determination, size and age structure, longevity and growth of co-occurring macrourid fishes

Odd Aksel Bergstad et al.

Summary: Nineteen species of the deep-water fish family Macrouridae inhabit the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) of the North Atlantic. Size, age structure, longevity and length at age were explored for seven of the more abundant species, revealing relatively low growth rates but significant interspecific variation in longevity. Age estimates derived from growth increments in otoliths provided the basis for studies of age structure, growth, and longevity within this family of deep-sea fish.
