Equilibria of complexes in the aqueous cobalt(II)-N-(2-hydroxybenzyl) phenylalanine system and their biological activity compared to analogous Schiff base structures

Magdalena Wozniczk et al.

Summary: Due to their excellent prospects in biological applications, Schiff bases and their complexes have attracted continuous interest. This study investigated the formation of four cobalt(II) complexes with the reduced Schiff base PhAlaSal in alkaline aqueous solution using pH-metry. The results confirmed the proposed species model through UV-Vis and ESI-MS studies. The Schiff base and its complexes showed antimicrobial abilities and cytotoxicity against cancer cells, with N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)phenylalanine demonstrating higher efficacy but also higher cytotoxicity than N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)alanine, while AlaSal showed low cytotoxicity for fibroblasts and high toxicity for gastric adenocarcinoma epithelial cells at bacteriostatic concentration.

Targeting Apoptosis in Cancer

Puneet Singh et al.

Summary: This review discusses apoptosis modulators in cancer and their recent developments. Through the combined evolution of medicinal chemistry and molecular biology, innovative inducers of apoptosis and inhibitors of anti-apoptotic regulators have been discovered. Many of these agents are now being tested in early-phase trials in cancer patients. We believe that apoptosis targeting holds promise as a relevant strategy in cancer therapeutics.

Synthesis, characterization and investigating the binding mechanism of novel coumarin derivatives with human serum albumin: Spectroscopic and computational approach

Edina H. Avdovic et al.

Summary: Two 4-hydroxycoumarin derivatives were synthesized and characterized in terms of their structure using spectroscopic techniques and theoretical methods. The results showed that these compounds exhibit good binding affinity with human serum albumin (HSA) through van der Waals' forces and hydrogen bonds. This study is important for future research in rational drug design.

Synthesis, DNA-/bovine serum albumin-binding affinity, and cytotoxicity of dinuclear platinum(II) complexes with 1,6-naphthyridine-bridging ligand

Bata Konovalov et al.

Summary: The dinuclear platinum(II) complexes Pt1 and Pt2 were synthesized and characterized, with Pt1 showing higher cytotoxicity towards solid cancer cell lines and lower cytotoxicity towards mMSC cells compared to Pt2. Furthermore, Pt1 complex induced apoptosis in 4T1 and A549 cells by increasing pro-apoptotic caspase-3 expression and decreasing anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Ki-67 expression, suggesting its potential antitumor capacity through facilitating apoptosis and inhibiting tumor cell proliferation.

Dorde S. Petrovic et al.

Summary: This paper presented the synthesis, characterization, HSA/DNA binding evaluation, in vitro cytotoxic activity, and in vitro antimicrobial activity of three new ligands and their palladium(II) complexes. The complexes showed good binding to HSA and CT-DNA, high cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines, and selective and moderate antimicrobial activity.

The Role of Ki67 in Evaluating Neoadjuvant Endocrine Therapy of Hormone Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer

Ailin Zhang et al.

Summary: Ki67, a proliferation marker, is proposed for breast cancer subtype classification, prognosis, and therapeutic response prediction. However, its questionable analytical validity hinders its widespread adoption in treatment decisions for breast cancer. Studies have shown potential for Ki67 as a predictive marker in neoadjuvant endocrine therapy.

Ki-67 gene expression

Sigrid Uxa et al.

Summary: Ki-67, a marker for cancer, is controlled by the expression of the MKI67 gene during the cell cycle. The interaction between DREAM, B-MYB-MuvB, FOXM1-MuvB, and RB plays a role in cell cycle-dependent transcription and transcriptional repression following p53 activation.

Summary: The newly synthesized palladium(II) complexes exhibit cytotoxic activity against colorectal cancer cells and demonstrate good binding affinity to DNA. Among them, the complex of Pd(II) ion with O,O'-diethyl ester of S,S-ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-(3,3'-1H-indol-3yl)propionic acid dihydrochloride shows the best inhibitory effect on HC116 cell line by six times compared to cisplatin.
