Synthesis of polynorbornadienes by ring-opening metathesis polymerization and their saturated derivatives bearing various ester groups and carboxyl groups

Xiaoxue Lin et al.

Summary: Various symmetric and non-symmetric polynorbornadienes with different ester and carboxyl groups were synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs' third generation catalyst (G3 or [Ru]-III catalyst). Selective monohydrolysis of symmetric diesters prepared half-esters, which were then directly subjected to ROMP with G3 catalyst resulting in trans structure and narrow polydispersity indexes. Hydrogenation of the polymers produced saturated polymers, improving their thermostabilities. The combination of selective monohydrolysis reactions and ROMP with G3 catalysts is an efficient method for producing various well-controlled homopolymers in a living manner.

Xiaokang Zhu et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a temperature-sensitive polymer and subsequent introduction of 6-aminohexanoic acid resulted in branched carboxyl-containing polymers, which could coordinate with Fe(III) to form temperature-sensitive polymer-based iron complexes. These complexes exhibited high catalytic activity in the Fenton oxidation of RhB and MB, achieving 97% and 96% decolorization within 2 hours. The catalyst could be easily recycled using the temperature-sensitive nature of the polymer.

Design of polymer-based nanoreactors for efficient acid/base cascade catalysis: A comparative study of site isolation strategies

Xiaokang Zhu et al.

Summary: Cascade catalysis is of great significance in chemical production as it allows for consecutive catalytic reactions without separation and purification of intermediate products. Acid/base cascade catalysis in one-pot is widely studied, but faces challenges due to incompatibility of the catalysts. In this study, three catalytic systems for acid/base cascade catalysis were fabricated using RAFT polymerization technique, including mixtures of two separated acid and base micelles, acid and base isolated micelles with/without an intermediate cross-linking layer as catalytic nanoreactors. Comparative study revealed that the intermediate cross-linking layer of core-shell micelle effectively hindered the contact between acid and base catalysts, resulting in good catalytic activities. This study may provide new ideas and fabrication approaches for other cascade catalysis with incompatible catalysts.

Solvent-Assisted Ketone Reduction by a Homogeneous Mn Catalyst

Annika M. Krieger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of solvation on the mechanism of ketone reduction and uncovers a new possible mechanism. This mechanism does not require the participation of N-H moieties in manganese catalysts and is strongly influenced by the presence of solvent molecules. The results also demonstrate that the enantioselectivity induced by chiral ligands is maintained in this mechanism.
