Green biosorbents based on glutaraldehyde cross-linked alginate/sepiolite hydrogel capsules for methylene blue, malachite green and methyl violet removal

Summary: In the synthesis of alginate-based composites, new materials consisting of alginate as biopolymer matrix, sepiolite and glutaraldehyde as cross-linking agents were obtained. The adsorption process of methylene blue, malachite green, and methyl violet from aqueous medium by the synthesized glutaraldehyde cross-linked alginate/sepiolite hydrogel capsules was studied. The experimental parameters and isotherm models were investigated to understand the adsorption behavior, and the results showed that the synthesized composite had good adsorption capability.

Viable production of hydrogen and methane from polluted water using eco-friendly plasmonic Pd-TiO2 nanocomposites

Summary: Solar-to-fuel conversion is a promising clean energy approach that has attracted the attention of researchers. The use of solar-driven photocatalysts, such as plasmonic nanoparticles, is crucial for producing valuable fuel gases like methane and hydrogen. In this study, orange peel extract was employed as a capping agent to combine titanium dioxide with Pd-plasmonic nanoparticles. The obtained plasmonic photocatalysts exhibited enhanced performance in capturing visible light and showed promising results in the production of combustible gases through photocatalytic reactions.

Functionalized biochars with highly-efficient malachite green adsorption property produced from banana peels via microwave-assisted pyrolysis

Summary: In this study, functionalized banana peel biochar (BPB) was prepared by microwave-assisted pyrolysis for the first time to investigate its adsorption to malachite green (MG) dye. The maximum adsorption capacity of BPB500 and BPB900 to malachite green reached 1790.30 and 2297.83 mg.g(-1) within 120 min. The adsorption mechanism of MG dye on BPB included hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding, pi-pi interaction, n-pi interaction, and ion exchange. Furthermore, BPB showed great potential for practical applications in simulated wastewater treatment experiments and cost calculations.

Electrochemical degradation and mineralisation of organic dyes in aqueous nitrate solutions

Summary: By using a simple copper electrode under cathodic conditions, reactive nitrosonium ions can be electrochemically generated for the degradation of different classes of synthetic organic dyes. This process can be achieved in an aqueous HNO3/KNO3 electrolyte at a relatively low cathodic potential of -0.5 V RHE at room temperature. The rapid decolorisation and mineralisation of various dye types have been demonstrated, showing potential for the remediation of polluted waterways.

The biocomposite was prepared by interaction between sodium alginate biopolymer and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). The adsorption characteristics of the synthesized Alg-ZnO biocomposite were analyzed using various techniques and isotherm models, showing favorable adsorption capacity and dominance of monolayer and physisorption.

Synthesis of Poly(Glycidyl Methacrylate) Based Hybrid Materials and Evaluation of Methylene Blue Adsorption: Structural Characterization and Adsorption Behaviour

Summary: Poly(Glycidyl methacrylate)/Fe3O4-GO nanocomposite (PFG) and Poly(Glycidyl methacrylate)-GO nanocomposite (PG) were prepared as reusable adsorbents for methylene blue dye (MB) adsorption. Characterization of PFG and PG was conducted to understand their structural, thermal, magnetic, morphological and compositional properties. The adsorption of MB on PFG and PG was studied by investigating pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and dye concentration. Both PFG and PG showed good fits with pseudo second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm for adsorption. PFG exhibited a higher maximum adsorption capacity for MB compared to PG due to the presence of Fe3O4, making it a super-paramagnetic material suitable for efficient recovery and reusability.

Synthesis of nanomagnetite/copper oxide/potassium carrageenan nanocomposite for the adsorption and Photo-Fenton degradation of Safranin-O: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Summary: In this study, a novel nanomaterial called MKCO was fabricated by incorporating Fenton (NM) and Fenton-like reagent (NCO) into a potassium carrageenan biopolymer matrix. The prepared MKCO showed unique properties and exhibited high adsorption capacity and catalytic degradation efficiency for Safranin-O dye. Langmuir's adsorption model was found to be the best-fitted model for SO adsorption onto the prepared solid materials. The catalytic decomposition of SO was found to be an endothermic and non-spontaneous process.

Effective adsorption and removal of malachite green and Pb2+from aqueous samples and fruit juices by pollen-inspired magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles/hydrogel beads

Summary: To address environmental pollution caused by dyes and heavy metals, it is crucial to develop adsorbents with efficient adsorption and removal capabilities. In this study, biomimetic apatite hydrogel beads resembling the structure of petunia pollen were created for the effective removal of lead ions (Pb2+) and malachite green (MG) through adsorption. By encapsulating magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (MHNPs) in sodium alginate gels using an ionic cross-linking approach, the resulting hydrogel beads (MHSB) exhibited satisfactory adsorption capacities of 208.06 mg/g for MG and 475.50 mg/g for Pb2+. The magnetic MHNPs and MHSB showed promising potential for adsorbing and removing dyes and heavy metal pollutants due to their strong adsorption capability and stability.

Efficient adsorption of methylene blue on novel triple-nanocomposites of potassium Kappa-carrageenan, calcium alginate and nanohydroxyapatite obtained from sea scallop shells

Summary: Four types of nano-solid adsorbents, including nanohydroxyapatite based on sea scallop shells (NHAP), potassium kappa-carrageenan (KG), potassium kappa-carrageenan/nanohydroxyapatite (KPC), and potassium kappa-carrageenan/calcium alginate/nanohydroxyapatite as triple biocomposite (TBC) beads, were synthesized and used for methylene blue removal from wastewater. The TBC particles showed higher specific surface area, smaller particle size, thermal stability, and the maximum adsorption capacity towards methylene blue. The adsorption of methylene blue onto all the solid adsorbents followed Freundlich, Langmuir, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin adsorption models, and the desorption efficiency reached about 86% using hydrochloric acid (1 mol/L) as the desorbing agent.

Anaerobic-aerobic treatment of high-strength and recalcitrant textile dyeing effluents

Summary: The eco-friendly treatment of complex textile and dyeing wastewaters is a pressing environmental concern. This study examined an approach that utilizes different treatment paths and integrated anaerobic-aerobic processes to treat high-strength and recalcitrant textile dyeing wastewaters. The results showed that polyaluminum chloride precoagulation was effective in removing over 97% of suspended solids (SS) and more than 70% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the suede fabric dyeing stream. Hydrolysis pretreatment also proved successful in removing up to 58% of COD and 83% of SS in other low-strength streams. Additionally, the integrated anaerobic-aerobic treatment achieved notable COD removal of up to 99% from high-strength wastewaters. The anaerobic granular sludge process demonstrated several advantageous attributes, including high feed loading, a smaller footprint, minimal sludge production, and good stability. Overall, the integrated anaerobic-aerobic treatment provides a robust and viable option for highly contaminated and recalcitrant textile dyeing wastewaters.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide-zinc oxide (GO-ZnO) nanocomposite photocatalytic membranes were fabricated using a novel double casting phase inversion method. The incorporation of GO-ZnO improved the hydrophilicity of the membranes, while the addition of PVP increased the pure water flux. Conversely, increasing GO-ZnO concentration improved the rejection of salt and drugs. Furthermore, the GO-ZnO/PVP membrane displayed the highest photocatalytic degradation performance. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential to improve both membrane filtration and photocatalytic properties through tailored membrane synthesis.

Utilizing modified cellulose nanoparticles derived from a plant loofah sponge to improve the removal of diazinon insecticide from an aqueous medium

Adsorption and Photo-Fenton Degradation of Methylene Blue Using Nanomagnetite/Potassium Carrageenan Bio-Composite Beads

A facile approach for the synthesis of spinel zinc ferrite/cellulose as an effective photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution

Design of a hybrid bio-adsorbent based on Sodium Alginate/Halloysite/Hemp hurd for methylene blue dye removal: kinetic studies and mathematical modeling

Summary: This research focuses on designing and fabricating green and sustainable systems for efficient removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. Hybrid beads were produced using ionotropic gelation technique with calcium chloride, consisting of a sodium alginate matrix, hemp hurd, and halloysite nanoclay. The adsorption capacity of the composite beads was found to increase with higher HNTs content, with the process mainly characterized by boundary diffusion and intraparticle diffusion. Additionally, diffusion of the dye varied with HNTs content and pH, decreasing from acidic to neutral solutions and then increasing in an alkaline environment.

Magnetized chitosan nanocomposite as an effective adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue and malachite green dyes

Photocatalytic degradation of malachite green using hydrothermally synthesized cobalt-doped TiO2 nanoparticles

Photocatalytic degradation of textile dyes using β-CD-CuO/ZnO nanocomposite

Summary: Photocatalytic degradation of dyes using metal oxides and their composites is an effective method for removing pollutants from wastewater systems. The coupling of metal oxides increases the efficiency of the process, thanks to their ability to absorb broad spectrum light, operate quickly, and exhibit natural p-n characteristics. In this study, binary and ternary nanocomposites of Copper Oxide/Zinc Oxide (CuO/ZnO) and beta cyclodextrin (beta-CD) were prepared using the sol-gel method. The synthesized materials were characterized using various techniques, and their photocatalytic performance was tested using model textile dyes. The addition of beta-CD improved the efficiency of the catalyst and reduced electron hole recombination. The beta-CD-CuO/ZnO nanocomposite exhibited superior photocatalytic activity compared to CuO/ZnO, with degradation efficiencies of up to 89.15% and 79.90% for MB and MG dyes, respectively, after 180 minutes of irradiation.

Adsorption of tetracycline using CuCoFe2O4@Chitosan as a new and green magnetic nanohybrid adsorbent from aqueous solutions: Isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic study

Summary: A powerful and magnetically separable nano-adsorbent CuCoFe2O4@Chitosan was successfully synthesized using a new microwave-assisted method. The magnetic nanohybrid adsorbent was characterized and its adsorption process for Tetracycline (TC) was investigated. The results showed that the TC adsorption process on the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite followed the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic. Thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, favorable, and exothermic. The nano-adsorbent exhibited good magnetic properties for easy separation and maintained high removal efficiency after multiple adsorption-desorption cycles.

Effective removal of anionic dyes from aqueous solutions by novel polyethylenimine-ozone oxidized hydrochar (PEI-OzHC) adsorbent

Summary: The adsorption behavior of anionic dyes by polyethylenimine ozone oxidized hydrochar was studied, and it was found that the adsorption capacities of the dyes increased with the functionalization of polyethylenimine. Surface characterization showed that the modification greatly enhanced the adsorbent surface chemistry. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results demonstrated the efficient removal of anionic dyes by the adsorbent.

Summary: Zn-Co layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets were synthesized and the effect of different temperatures on LDH was studied. LDH-300 showed efficient removal of Ponceau 4R dye from water. The study investigated the impact of various parameters on the photo-degradation process and obtained relevant kinetic and thermodynamic parameters.

CuCoFe2O4@MC/AC as a new hybrid magnetic nanocomposite for metronidazole removal from wastewater: Bioassay and toxicity of effluent

Summary: CuCoFe2O4@MC/AC, a highly powerful and magnetically separable nano-adsorbent, was synthesized using a novel microwave-assisted technique. The nanomagnetic adsorbent showed high adsorption efficiency for pollutants under optimal conditions. The adsorption process followed Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models. The reusability of the magnetic nano-adsorbent decreased slightly after multiple cycles. Toxicity and bioassay evaluations indicated the potential of CuCoFe2O4@MC/AC for antibiotic removal.

Dehydrate Sewage Sludge as an Efficient Adsorbent for Malachite Green Removal in Textile Wastewater: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Summary: In this study, a simple method using dried dewatered sewage sludge (D@DSS) as an adsorbent was proposed for the removal of malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solutions. The D@DSS showed excellent adsorption capacity for MG in synthetic and industrial wastewater, and had better selectivity towards cationic dyes compared to other dyes. The adsorbent characterization confirmed its rough and charged surface with specific functional groups, and the adsorption process followed the Jovanovic model isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetics.

Evaluation of Cationic Methylene Blue Dye Removal by High Surface Area Mesoporous Activated Carbon Derived from Ulva lactuca

Summary: Mesoporous nano-activated carbon was prepared from green algae Ulva lactuca using zinc chloride impregnation as the activation process. The obtained activated carbon has high carbon content, specific surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter. The adsorption properties of the activated carbon were tested using Methylene blue dye, showing effective adsorption capacity and high correlation with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Multiple adsorption-desorption cycles showed minimal loss of dye-adsorption capacities.
