Multidimensional scholarly citations: Characterizing and understanding scholars' citation behaviors

Yunxue Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates scholars' citation behaviors from a fine-grained perspective. It found that citation proximity is the most relevant category to scholars' citation decision-making, followed by citation authority and citation inertia. Big-name scholars exhibit a unique pattern of citation behaviors, with their citation decision-making closely correlated with citation inertia.

Fine-grained citation count prediction via a transformer-based model with among-attention mechanism

Shengzhi Huang et al.

Summary: A novel fine-grained citation count prediction task (FGCCP) was proposed in the study, utilizing a transformer-based model (MTAT) which showed satisfactory prediction accuracy surpassing common machine learning and deep learning models. The study also discussed the potential role of the among-attention mechanism and the reasons for the model outperforming state-of-the-art strategies in scientific research evaluation.

Measuring coauthors' credit in medicine field-Based on author contribution statement and citation context analysis

Siluo Yang et al.

Summary: The study proposes a context-based author credit (CAC) model to accurately allocate individual credit to coauthors in a multi-authored paper. The model bypasses the limitations of existing author credit analysis methods by considering the relationship between citation strength and contributor roles, and introduces a new application in author academic evaluation.

Investigating the mentorship effect on the academic success of young scientists: An empirical study of the 985 project universities of China

Jing Shang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mentorship effect by analyzing the influence of mentors' academic titles and research performance on the academic success of young scientists. The results suggest that young scientists have a higher probability of achieving academic success if their mentors hold the titles of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) academicians. However, this positive effect may not be significant or even negative in terms of improved academic performance. The role of mentors' research performance in moderating the relationship between the young scientists' research performance and the probability of acquiring an academic title is not significant and may also be negative.

Conjoint analysis of researchers' hidden preferences for bibliometrics, altmetrics, and usage metrics

Steffen Lemke et al.

Summary: Researchers are increasingly relying on a variety of metrics, both quantitative and qualitative, when selecting literature to read. Citation counts and Journal Impact Factors are among the most important indicators considered. While there is a favorable view of bibliometrics, there is a widespread skepticism towards altmetrics among researchers.

How is science clicked on Twitter? Click metrics for Bitly short links to scientific publications

Zhichao Fang et al.

Summary: This article examines the click behavior of Twitter users on Bitly short links to scientific publications embedded in scholarly Twitter mentions. Results show that about half of the links were not clicked, and for those that were, clicks mostly occurred shortly after the initial tweet. Links to publications in Social Sciences and Humanities attracted more clicks on Twitter. Correlations between Twitter clicks and impact indicators vary, with weak correlations to scholarly impact indicators and moderate correlations to other Twitter engagement indicators.

A neural topic model with word vectors and entity vectors for short texts

Xiaowei Zhao et al.

Summary: In this paper, a VAETM model is proposed to handle the issue of topic discovery in short texts by integrating word vector representation and entity vector representation. By learning embedding representations of words and entities using external corpora and knowledge graphs, the models outperform various state-of-the-art models in terms of perplexity, NPMI, and accuracy. Further improvement is achieved with the introduction of SVAETM, a supervised version of VAETM that considers label information in training to enhance topic distribution inference and topic generation.

A network embedding-based scholar assessment indicator considering four facets: Research topic, author credit allocation, field-normalized journal impact, and published time

Qing Xie et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new scholar performance assessment indicator called the normalized scholar academic productivity (NSAP) indicator, which overcomes the limitations of traditional indicators by considering diverse aspects of scholar research achievements. The research topic, author sequence, and author role play key roles in the authorship credit allocation strategy, while field-normalized journal impact assigns different weights to raw publication counts and citation counts. The NSAP shows significant improvements in topic-related scholar performance assessment compared to traditional citation count indicators like H-index and author citations.

Potential index: Revealing the future impact of research topics based on current knowledge networks

Qiang Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between scientific impact and knowledge network structure, proposing a novel potential index to model topic impact. The empirical results show that the potential index serves as a good predictor of future topic impact with a high R-2 and positive correlation. The study contributes to scientific impact modeling by establishing a relationship between topic impact and knowledge structure, aiding in predicting the potential impact of research topics.
