Diversity and interdisciplinarity: Should variety, balance and disparity be combined as a product or better as a sum? An information-theoretical and statistical estimation approach

Ruediger Mutz

Summary: Diversity is a central concept in ecology, social sciences, and bibliometrics. This study proposes a probability-based diversity indicator that reconceptualizes the components of diversity as entropy masses, addressing an inconsistency issue in existing indicators. The overall diversity of research projects in terms of entropy is estimated, with journal articles being the most balanced output type across research areas.

The effect of interdisciplinary components' citation intensity on scientific impact

Shiji Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the interdisciplinary components' citation intensity (ICCI) has a positive impact on the scientific impact of papers. The relationship between ICCI and scientific impact is curvilinear, showing an inverted U-shape. Including more citation-intensive interdisciplinary components can enhance scientific impact, but excessive use may diminish it.

Exploring the interdisciplinarity patterns of highly cited papers

Shiji Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between interdisciplinarity and the citation impact of highly cited papers by comparing disciplinary diversity dimensions and integration indicators. Results show that highly cited papers tend to have higher variety and disparity, but lower balance, and integration interdisciplinarity indicators have a positive effect on citation impact. Variety is identified as the most significant factor for citation impact, followed by disparity and balance.

A large-scale comparison of coverage and mentions captured by the two altmetric aggregators: Altmetric.com and PlumX

Mousumi Karmakar et al.

Summary: The increased attention of scholarly articles on social media has led to the emergence of altmetric aggregators like Altmetric.com and PlumX, which track activity and events in social media and academic social networks. These platforms provide researchers with coverage and mention data across different platforms, but they differ in terms of range and quantity of mentions captured.

On the relationship between interdisciplinarity and impact: Distinct effects on academic and broader impact

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of interdisciplinary research on citation impact and broader impact, showing positive effects on both academic and broader impact. Interdisciplinary publications tend to attract more citations and have higher PLoS usage, with signs that PLoS usage and citations can mutually reinforce each other.
