Sources, characteristics, toxicity, and control of ultrafine particles: An overview

Andrea L. Moreno-Rios et al.

Summary: Air pollution caused by particulate matter is a major threat to human health, especially in large cities. The size, composition, and toxicity of these particles vary. Ultrafine particles have a greater impact on human health as they can enter the lungs and vital organs, leading to diseases. In addition, particulate matter pollution is associated with respiratory conditions, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity.

Sulfur dioxide absorption characteristics of aqueous amino acid solutions

Kwanghwi Kim et al.

Summary: The SO2 absorption/desorption performances of 14 aqueous amino acid solutions were evaluated in this study. Four amino acids – 5-aminovaleic acid, 4-aminobutyric acid, beta-alanine, and histidine – were identified as suitable SO2 absorbents based on their performance. The results provide a strategy for preparing eco-friendly SO2 absorbents, with the cyclic capacities of the identified absorbents being comparable or superior to deep eutectic solvents and ionic liquids.

Effect of amino acid additives in ammonia solution on SO2 absorption and ammonia escape using bubbling reactor for membrane contactor applications

Kwanghwi Kim et al.

Summary: Controlling SO2 emissions is crucial for environmental and human health. Various techniques, including limestone and ammonia solutions, have been proposed. However, ammonia solutions have the problem of volatility. This study investigated the use of amino acid additives to improve SO2 absorption in aqueous ammonia solution and found that histidine showed the best performance. The study also analyzed the SO2 absorption mechanism using nuclear magnetic resonance.

Selective Sulfur Dioxide Absorption from Simulated Flue Gas Using Various Aqueous Alkali Solutions in a Polypropylene Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactor: Removal Efficiency and Use of Sulfur Dioxide

Hyun Sic Park et al.

Summary: Hollow fiber membrane contactors (HFMCs) offer a large specific surface area and significantly reduced volume, making them advantageous compared to conventional gas-liquid contactors. In this study, a polypropylene (PP) HFMC was used to measure the selective removal efficiency of flue gas containing both SO2 and CO2. Using a 0.05 M ammonia solution, a removal efficiency of 95% or higher was achieved with continuous operation for over 100 hours. The absorbent saturated in the once-through mode was identified as aqueous ammonium sulfate ((NH4)(2)SO4) solution, which can be used as fertilizer without additional processing.

A pyridine derivative 2-(2-Methylaminoethyl)pyridine (MAEP) as a 'green' corrosion inhibitor for low-carbon steel in hydrochloric acid media

Aqeel Alrebh et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that MAEP is an effective corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in HCl solution, providing excellent protection under various conditions and achieving optimal corrosion inhibition efficiency at a concentration of 25 mM. The adsorption of MAEP on the CS surface follows a modified-Langmuir isotherm and exhibits relatively fast adsorption kinetics.

Simulation of SO2 absorption and performance enhancement of wet flue gas desulfurization system

Zhongyang Zhao et al.

Summary: The importance of wet flue gas desulfurization systems in treating high SO2 concentration flue gas is discussed in this study. The influencing factors of SO2 absorption process in tray scrubbers are investigated, indicating that using tray scrubbers is more suitable for desulfurizing high SO2 concentration flue gas compared to adjusting pH values.
