Field and Numerical Investigations of Wave Effects on Groundwater Flow and Salt Transport in a Sandy Beach

Shengchao Yu et al.

Summary: Coastal dynamic forces, such as waves and tides, play a significant role in groundwater circulation and salt transport in the intertidal zone. This study integrates wave height fluctuations with tidal levels using an iterative least squares fitting method and simulates groundwater flow and salt transport considering the wave effect. The results show that incorporating the wave effect leads to a closer match between simulated data and measured data, and increases submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) with a higher proportion of recirculated SGD. The water influx and efflux rates also significantly increase, particularly during periods of high wave height.

Effect of time-varying wave conditions on the fate of nitrogen in a freshwater unconfined nearshore aquifer

Sabina Rakhimbekova et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of time-varying wave conditions on the fate of nitrogen in a freshwater unconfined nearshore aquifer. The simulations show that time-varying wave conditions enhance mixing in the nearshore aquifer and impact nitrogen transformations. The findings highlight the importance of considering time-varying wave conditions when designing field investigations and analyzing field data.

Analytical study for wave-induced submarine groundwater discharge in subtidal zone

Summary: This study investigates the process of wave-induced submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). The results show that the loading effect decreases the head gradients between seawater and porewater, while wave-induced SGD generally increases with the aquifer's thickness and permeability.
