Understanding advances and challenges of urban water security and sustainability in China based on water footprint dynamics

Binghua Gong et al.

Summary: The sustainability of China's cities is threatened by water scarcity caused by both quantity and quality issues. The water footprint can be measured from consumption or production perspectives. While the water footprint from the consumption perspective has been widely studied, the changes in water footprint from the production perspective in China's cities remain unclear. A large-scale decrease in urban water footprint from the production perspective has been observed, with significant reductions in drylands. The implementation of water pollution prevention policies has played a crucial role in these savings. However, the rapid growth of domestic and ecological blue water footprint caused by urbanization and urban greening poses a challenge to alleviating urban water scarcity in the future.

Future water security under climate change: a perspective of the Grand River Watershed

Baljeet Kaur et al.

Summary: Climate change affects streamflow and freshwater availability in the Grand River Watershed (GRW), posing a threat to water security. A study using the SWAT model predicted a warmer and wetter future for the GRW. The results showed that blue water may become scarcer compared to green water due to population growth, increased water demand, and changes in irrigation.

Interactive influence of climate variability and land-use change on blue and green water resources: a case study from the Ganjiang River Basin, China

Wenting Li et al.

Summary: The response of blue and green water to climate and land-use change in the Ganjiang River Basin was evaluated using the SWAT model. Future land-use changes in the basin indicate a decrease in cropland, woodland, and grassland, with an increase in build-up and water areas. Climate projections suggest increased precipitation and temperature, leading to a decrease in blue water and an increase in green water resources in different scenarios. The influence of climate variation on water resources appears to be higher than that of integrated impacts of climate and land-use changes.

Influence of Land Use Change on Green and Blue Water Resources in Xixi Basin of Southeast China during 1970s-2018

Kun Rong et al.

Summary: This study used the SWAT model to investigate the impact of land use change on water resources in the Xixi Basin of China, and analyzed the temporal and spatial variations of green and blue water. The results showed that land use change caused a decrease in green water and an increase in blue water, with the most significant changes occurring in the upper sub-basins of the basin.

Assessing basin blue-green available water components under different management and climate scenarios using SWAT

F. Jeyrani et al.

Summary: This study utilized the SWAT model to investigate the components of basin available water (AW) and established a comprehensive water balance framework for estimating diverse forms of AW. The results from applying this system to the TashkBakhtegan basin in Iran showed significant changes in blue water components, as well as the sensitivity of blue water to future precipitation variations compared to green water. The study also highlighted the impact of major dam construction on spatial blue water components and the increase in cropped areas leading to water shortage in the basin.

Yanan Liang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a dynamic water security assessment framework and applies it to the Yalong River Basin in southwest China, revealing insights such as the stronger temporal variation of blue water compared to green water, and the presence of green water crisis hotspots in the middle reach of the basin. The research also highlights the potential for rain-fed agriculture in areas with lower green water scarcity and the water supply prospect for socioeconomic utilization in areas with higher blue water security.
