Energy dissimilation characteristics and shock mechanism of coal-rock mass induced in steeply-inclined mining: comparison based on physical simulation and numerical calculation

Huicong Xu et al.

Summary: In recent years, rockbursts induced by the instability of the coal-rock mass have become more serious in steeply-inclined coal seam mining in the Urumqi mining area. This study investigated the energy dissemination characteristics and squeeze-prying induced-shock mechanism of steeply-inclined coal-rock mass during deep mining. The results revealed the deep mining limit depth of the Wudong Coal Mine and the long-term low frequency-energy storage period of the mass. The study also proposed control measures to effectively reduce high energy microseismic events and stress concentration in the strong-weak structural area.

Cosserat ordinary state-based peridynamic model and numerical simulation of rock fracture

Luming Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an ordinary state-based peridynamic (OS-PD) model based on the Cosserat continuum to predict the propagation and coalescence of rock cracks. Compared with the classical OS-PD model, the pairwise moment between two material points is also considered in the proposed Cosserat ordinary state-based peridynamic (COS-PD) model. The rotational stiffness and rotation angle are introduced to characterize the microdeformation and microstructure of rock, and the expression of rotational stiffness coefficient is derived. Three numerical cases are presented to compare the performance of OS-PD model and COS-PD model, and the effect of rotational stiffness on crack growth is investigated. The results show that the introduction of pairwise moment accelerates the rock failure process, and the crack propagation type and coalescence mode are more inclined to shear failure with the increase of rotation stiffness coefficient. Compared with experimental results, it is found that the COS-PD model can extend the classical OS-PD model and better capture the evolution process of the rock crack.

An improved meshless method for modeling the mesoscale cracking processes of concrete containing random aggregates and initial defects

Shuyang Yu et al.

Summary: Traditional kernel functions in SPH have been improved to simulate progressive cracking processes. A method for generating meso properties in concrete and a region searching algorithm have been proposed. Uniaxial tension numerical simulations have been carried out on concrete specimens with different initial defects and aggregate percentages, showing that these factors greatly affect concrete failure modes. The rationality of the improved method has been verified by comparing with previous experimental and numerical results, and future research should focus on the development of multi-field coupling 3D parallel MSC-IKSPH programs.

A meshless method for modeling the microscopic drying shrinkage cracking processes of concrete and its applications

Shuyang Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the traditional numerical methods for shrinkage cracking of concrete structures were improved in the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The improved method allowed for simulations of progressive cracking processes, humidity expansions, and humidity-stress-damage coupling problems in concrete. The research results provide insights into the mechanisms of concrete shrinkage cracking and moisture migration, as well as the application of SPH method in simulating humidity-stress-damage coupling problems.

Coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical model for an enhanced geothermal system and numerical analysis of its heat mining performance

Luming Zhou et al.

Summary: The study explains the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical coupling mechanism in an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) reservoir and establishes a fully coupled mathematical model, verified through an example. Numerical simulations are used to study heat transfer, fluid flow, and mechanical characteristics in a geothermal reservoir over 40 years, with analysis on the effects of fractures, coupling conditions, and model parameters on mining performance. The results show that the dual-media model can reflect anisotropy in temperature, pressure, and stress due to fractures, providing insights for optimizing EGS mining efficiency.

Analytical model for fluid flow distribution in an Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)

Pranay Asai et al.

Summary: This study focuses on optimizing the flow distribution in doublet enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). An analytical model based on Kirchhoff's law is developed to analyze several critical parameters related to well designs. Simulation and sensitivity analysis show that anti-parallel doublet systems perform the best in terms of fluid distribution, and fracture permeability, perforation size, and flow rate also influence the flow distribution.

Summary: This paper reviews hydraulic stimulation strategies for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), including the mechanisms of permeability and heat exchange area increases, as well as fluid injection-induced seismicity. Different hydraulic stimulation strategies, such as conventional hydraulic stimulation, multi-stage fracturing, and cyclic soft stimulation, are discussed based on theoretical studies, laboratory experiments, and in-situ field experiments. The importance of a comprehensive geological characterization, proper well arrangement design, and appropriate fluid injection strategy for successful EGS development is emphasized.

Summary: The study shows that optimizing the geometrical parameters of lateral wells, such as length, spacing, and number, is crucial for enhancing the performance of multilateral-well EGS. Longer lateral wells and larger well spacing are beneficial for improving the EGS performance, while the number of wells should be optimized based on the specific discrete fracture network. The research provides valuable guidance for the design of lateral wells in multilateral-well EGS.
