Comparison of remote sensing evapotranspiration models: Consistency, merits, and pitfalls

Peng Bai

Summary: This study compared three widely used remote sensing ET models and found that the PML model performs the best on both site and basin scales, possibly due to its land-cover-based parameter configuration and consideration of soil evaporation and transpiration responses to soil water deficit.

Improved soil evaporation remote sensing retrieval algorithms and associated uncertainty analysis on the Tibetan Plateau

Jin Feng et al.

Summary: This study improved the satellite-driven P-LSH algorithm for more accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) in alpine barren areas on the Tibetan Plateau by introducing two effective soil moisture constraint schemes. These constraint schemes significantly improved the performance of the P-LSH algorithm, resulting in higher simulation accuracy than existing algorithms.

Quantifying the effect of vegetation greening on evapotranspiration and its components on the Loess Plateau

Zelong Yang et al.

Summary: The Grain for Green Project has greatly improved vegetation greenness on the Loess Plateau in China. This study quantifies the impact of greening on evapotranspiration using a model and attribution methods. The results show that greening increases transpiration and decreases soil evaporation, leading to a slight increase in total evapotranspiration. However, this may exacerbate water scarcity on the Loess Plateau.

Greening-induced increase in evapotranspiration over Eurasia offset by CO2-induced vegetational stomatal closure

Xuanze Zhang et al.

Summary: This study estimated the increasing trend of evapotranspiration (ET) over Eurasia during 1982-2014 using a remote sensing-based water-carbon coupling model. The results showed that the increasing trend was mainly from vegetated regions in central and eastern Europe, India, and southeast China. Sensitivity experiments indicated that climate forcing and increased leaf area index (LAI) were the major drivers of the Eurasian ET trend.

Integrating remote sensing data in optimization of a national water resources model to improve the spatial pattern performance of evapotranspiration

Mohsen Soltani et al.

Summary: The study aims to improve the spatial pattern performance of simulated actual evapotranspiration (AET) for the entire land-phase of Denmark by integrating remote-sensing data and robust objective functions in the calibration and optimization of the national water resources model.
