Quaternary Ammonium Compounds: A Chemical Class of Emerging Concern

William A. . Arnold et al.

Summary: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), widely used as antimicrobials and preservatives, have experienced increased usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies show increased human exposure to QACs and their adverse environmental and health impacts, leading to the need for a reevaluation of the risks and benefits of their production, use, and disposal.

Exeporfinium chloride (XF-73) nasal gel dosed over 24 hours prior to surgery significantly reduced Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage in cardiac surgery patients: Safety and efficacy results from a randomized placebo-controlled phase 2 study

Julie E. Mangino et al.

Summary: We conducted a study involving 83 cardiac-surgery patients with nasal S. aureus carriage who were given 4 intranasal administrations of XF-73 nasal gel or placebo less than 24 hours before surgery. One hour before surgery, the patients who received XF-73 showed a reduction of 2.5 log(10) in nasal S. aureus carriage, compared to a reduction of 0.4 log(10) CFU/mL in the placebo group (95% CI, -2.7 to -1.5; P < .0001).

Quaternary ammonium compounds of emerging concern: Classification, occurrence, fate, toxicity and antimicrobial resistance

Sanjeeb Mohapatra et al.

Summary: Amplified hygiene and precautionary measures are necessary to control COVID-19, but may lead to increased use and discharge of disinfectants, particularly quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). This review discusses the classification and mechanism of disinfectants, with a focus on QACs, and highlights the occurrence, fate, toxicity, and antimicrobial resistance associated with QACs. Evidence shows a significant rise in the mass load of QACs at wastewater treatment plants and higher concentrations in residential dust during the pandemic, posing potential risks to human health and the environment.

A new class of quaternary ammonium compounds as potent and environmental friendly disinfectants

Guodong Wang et al.

Summary: A new type of disinfectant containing zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) was synthesized and showed higher antimicrobial effect against bacteria compared to traditional quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). The disinfectant exhibited enhanced bactericidal toxicity at nanomolar concentrations when combined with specific light wavelengths. Furthermore, it was safe for mammalian cells and environmentally friendly due to its degradation under sunlight illumination.

Application of advanced materials in sonophotocatalytic processes for the remediation of environmental pollutants

Jayaraman Theerthagiri et al.

Summary: Significant industrial advancements have led to the release of toxic pollutants into the environment, necessitating efficient wastewater treatment processes to reduce contamination. Photocatalytic degradation is considered effective, but has limitations. Combining sonolysis with photocatalysis shows benefits for environmental remediation by utilizing more active radicals to degrade organic pollutants.

Method development and mechanistic study on direct pulsed laser irradiation process for highly effective dechlorination of persistent organic pollutants

Yiseul Yu et al.

Summary: This study presents an advanced technique using pulsed laser irradiation for the dechlorination of pollutants such as HCB without additional catalysts or supports. Optimal results showed that a lower laser wavelength with specific power settings could achieve over 95% dechlorination efficiency within a short period of time. The improvement of laser beam profile also played a crucial role in enhancing the dechlorination process, providing great potential for environmental remediation.

Rapid and highly selective electrochemical sensor based on ZnS/ Au-decorated f-multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites produced via pulsed laser technique for detection of toxic nitro compounds

Shreyanka Shankar Naik et al.

Summary: Novel ZnS/Au/f-MWCNT nanostructures were successfully fabricated and used to develop an electrochemical sensor capable of selectively and sensitively detecting the toxic organic compound 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The optimized nanocomposite exhibited a wide linear dynamic response, high sensitivity, and low detection limit, attributed to numerous active sites and enhanced electron transfer rate. Interference and stability studies demonstrated the sensor's ability to selectively detect 4-NP even in the presence of competing ions.
