Ambient air pollution and infant health: a narrative review

Li-Zi Lin et al.

Summary: The extensive evidence of the effects of ambient air pollution on child health is well documented, but there is limited review on their health effects during infancy. Symptoms or health conditions attributed to ambient air pollution in infancy could lead to the development of severe diseases in childhood.

Preconceptional, prenatal, and postnatal exposure to home environmental factors and childhood otitis media

Chan Lu et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that exposure to indoor environmental factors such as mold/damp stains, mold/damp clothes or bedding, and new furniture was associated with childhood otitis media (OM). The critical timing windows for exposure included the year before pregnancy, pregnancy, first year of life, and past year. Children living near traffic roads had a stronger association between early life exposure to indoor environmental factors and OM risk.

Effects of intrauterine and post-natal exposure to air pollution on children's pneumonia: Key roles in different particulate matters exposure during critical time windows

Chan Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to pollutants during pregnancy and after birth has an impact on children's doctor diagnosed pneumonia (DDP). Intrauterine and post-natal exposure to PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 were associated with DDP. Intrauterine exposure to PM2.5 and post-natal exposure to PM10 were associated with increased risk of pneumonia. The second trimester, third trimester, and first year after birth were identified as critical windows for PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 exposure. Daytime exposure to traffic-related pollution, especially in early life, increased the risk of DDP.

The effect of prenatal and early-postnatal exposure to classical air pollution on childhood pneumonia in China

Yanlin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different patterns of ambient air pollutants exposure during early life on childhood pneumonia and found that exposure to PM10 and SO2 during the first year of life is significantly associated with a higher prevalence of pneumonia.

Indoor microbiome, air pollutants and asthma, rhinitis and eczema in preschool children - A repeated cross-sectional study

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant increase in the number of observed species in bacterial and fungal communities in classrooms from 2012 to 2019, with drastic changes in microbial community compositions. The temporal microbiome variation was found to be more significant than the spatial variation within the city. Additionally, indoor microorganisms were shown to play a mediating role in the association between environmental characteristics and health effects, indicating the importance of incorporating both biological and chemical exposure in comprehensive exposure assessments.

Association between air pollution and outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis: Effect modification by ambient temperature and relative humidity

Rongshan Wu et al.

Summary: This study found a significant association between air pollution and outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis (AR), with the effect being modified by ambient temperature and relative humidity. The findings suggest that air pollution increases the risk of AR outpatient visits, particularly at low temperature and high humidity.

Associations of Early-Life Exposure to Submicron Particulate Matter With Childhood Asthma and Wheeze in China

Chuansha Wu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between early-life exposure to different size-segregated particulate matter and childhood asthma and wheeze. The results showed that early-life exposure to PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 was significantly associated with an increased risk of childhood asthma and wheeze, with PM1 contributing mainly to the association between PM2.5 and childhood asthma.

Anna O. Lukina et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the association between ambient air pollutant levels and Emergency Department visits for ear and mastoid pathology, finding a positive correlation between NO2 concentration and visits for children, with significant increases in visits for both boys and girls in the short-term following exposure to NO2.

Associations between the indoor microbiome, environmental characteristics and respiratory infections in junior high school students of Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Xi Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that certain bacteria and fungi in the indoor environment are beneficially associated with respiratory infections, primarily derived from outdoor sources. Additionally, house dust mite allergens and outdoor NO2 concentration are related to respiratory infections, with these health effects partially or fully mediated by indoor microorganisms.
