Effects of phosphate on the toxicity and bioaccumulation of arsenate in marine diatom Skeletonema costatum

Qunhuan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of phosphate on the toxicity and bioaccumulation of arsenic in marine microalgae. The results show that elevated phosphate concentrations can suppress arsenic toxicity and affect its bioaccumulation. These findings help enhance our understanding of the impact of eutrophication on arsenic in the marine environment.

The in-situ release of algal bloom populations and the role of prokaryotic communities in their establishment and growth

Xiao Ma et al.

Summary: This study simulated the sudden influx of harmful algal blooms into new estuarine waters and investigated the role of prokaryotic communities in the re-establishment and growth of these blooms. The results showed that a diatom species had better adaptation ability to the new environment and increased significantly, while a dinoflagellate population did not increase following incubation. The addition of the diatom also influenced the structure of particle-attached prokaryotic communities. Metagenomic analysis revealed that labile carbohydrates and organic nitrogen produced by the diatom contributed to the surge of certain prokaryotes. Additionally, a bacteria strain associated with the diatom was described for the first time. The close association between the two promoted the growth of both populations and facilitated the establishment of the diatom bloom.

Arsenic speciation and biotransformation pathways in the aquatic ecosystem: The significance of algae

Muhammad Mahroz Hussain et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination of aquatic systems is a global threat that can harm both humans and other living organisms, and algae play an important role in the biotransformation of arsenic. This review provides an in-depth exploration of various sources of arsenic, its distribution in water bodies, and the factors influencing its behavior in aquatic ecosystems, as well as the potential role of algae in arsenic remediation.

Bioavailability of Organic Phosphorus Compounds to the Harmful Dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi

Kaixuan Huang et al.

Summary: Karenia mikimotoi is a well-known harmful bloom species in temperate coastal waters, and its characteristics in hydrolysis of different forms of phosphorus substrates, growth, and physiological responses were investigated in this study. The algae produced comparable quantities of enzymes to hydrolyze organic phosphorus substrates, with faster hydrolysis of phosphomonoesters compared to phosphodiesters. The presence of organic phosphorus substrates significantly influenced the hemolytic activities of K. mikimotoi, suggesting their potential important role in blooms.
