Speciation and mobility of arsenic and antimony in soils and mining wastes from an abandoned Sb-Au mining area

Petr Drahota et al.

Summary: Gold mining activities are an important source of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) pollution. This study investigates the distribution, speciation, and mobility of As and Sb in mining wastes and soil samples from two ore districts in the Czech Republic. The results show that As and Sb are mainly associated with secondary mineral phases and crystalline iron (hydr)oxides in the mining wastes, while in the soils, they are bound to iron (hydr)oxides and clay minerals. The leaching of As and Sb from the samples is pH-dependent and generally low, but the addition of low phosphate concentrations can increase the mobility of As. Overall, the findings highlight the potential environmental hazard of As and Sb dispersion from mining wastes through rainwater leaching.

Mechanisms of Arsenic and Antimony Co-sorption onto Jarosite: An X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic Study

Niloofar Karimian et al.

Summary: Jarosite, a common mineral in acidic sulfur-rich environments, can strongly sorb both As(V) and Sb(V). Little is known regarding the mechanisms that control simultaneous co-sorption of As(V) and Sb(V) to jarosite. This study examined the sorption mechanisms of As(V) and Sb(V) to jarosite, revealing a strong contrast in their sorption behaviors.

Summary: The Xikuangshan mine, the largest antimony mine in the world, was studied to understand the source and mobility of antimony in water systems. It was found that oxidative weathering and leaching infiltration are the main processes for antimony mobilization, along with adsorption and mixing.

Geochemical impact of dissolved organic matter on antimony mobilization in shallow groundwater of the Xikuangshan antimony mine, Hunan Province, China

Chunming Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the mobilization of antimony (Sb) in shallow groundwater in the Xikuangshan mine. The results showed that DOM plays a key role in controlling the Sb migration, primarily through complexing agents, competitive adsorption, and photopromoted oxidation mechanisms. This research enhances our understanding of the Sb migration mechanism in oxic groundwater.

Summary: This study focuses on an area near a typical Cu-polymetallic deposit in central Tibet affected by neutralized acid mine drainage (AMD). By studying the distribution of secondary precipitates and heavy metals, the research aims to better understand the binding form of toxic elements in secondary minerals and their impact on water resources and the environment.

Acidity-dependent mobilization of antimony and arsenic in sediments near a mining area

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mobility of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) in sediments near mining areas and identified the factors controlling their mobilization. The results showed that the leachability of Sb and As exhibited a V-shape pattern, with the lowest concentration observed at an acidity of 1.6 eq H+/kg. The study also predicted that Sb and As would be immobilized in sediments when the acidity accumulated to 1.6 eq H+/kg for a long term.

Structural and mechanistic study of antimonite complexation with organic ligands at the goethite-water interface

Wen Zhong et al.

Summary: Antimony, a re-emerging contaminant, exhibits complexation with natural organic matter that is influenced by global climate change. By studying the interactions between Sb(III) and organic ligands at the molecular level, it was found that organic ligands bind Sb(III) through nucleophilic functional groups, inhibiting its precipitation and oxidation in the environment.

Evaluation of measured dissolved and bio-met predicted bioavailable Cu, Ni and Zn concentrations in runoff from three urban catchments

Sarah Lindfors et al.

Summary: Urban runoff is a key source of pollution contributing to the poor quality of surface water, with the behavior and bioavailability of metals in it being complex and requiring further research. The study compared measured metal concentrations in dissolved fractions with predicted bioavailable fractions, showing that bioavailable concentrations were significantly lower than dissolved concentrations and originated from both colloidal and truly dissolved fractions.

EEM-PARAFAC characterization of dissolved organic matter and its relationship with disinfection by-products formation potential in drinking water sources of northeastern China

Summary: The study investigated the variations in Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water of M reservoir over a year using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) to evaluate the formation potentials of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Different components of DOM were identified in the reservoir water, with seasonal differences observed in DOM content. The study highlighted the impact of DOM source, types, and humification degree on the formation of DBPs, with specific correlations observed between certain DOM components and different DBPs.
