Co-metabolism of nonylphenol ethoxylate in sequencing batch reactor under aerobic conditions

Alpaslan Ekdal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the co-metabolism characteristics of nonylphenol polyethoxylate (NPEO) in an activated sludge system. It was found that the biodegradation of NPEO was influenced by the major by-product nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO). However, NPEO did not have an inhibitory effect on the microbial culture in terms of heterotrophic and autotrophic activities.

Legacy halogenated organic contaminants in urban-influenced waters using passive polyethylene samplers: Emerging evidence of anthropogenic land-use-based sources and ecological risks

Wenlu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial trends of legacy halogenated organic pollutants in an urban estuary area. The results showed that urban stormwater and treated wastewater were major sources of these pollutants, which pose potential ecological risks. The study also found that past usage and historic contamination could re-enter surface water through atmospheric transport and deposition. This study provides new insights into the presence, sources, and transport of these pollutants in urban estuaries.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of phenol on microbial communities in coking wastewater containing indole. The addition of phenol was found to enhance the removal efficiency of indole, and different microbial communities showed specific differences in the abundance of certain genera. Furthermore, phenol stimulation also increased positive interactions among bacteria.

Metagenomics and network analysis elucidating the coordination between fermentative bacteria and microalgae in a novel bacterial-algal coupling reactor (BACR) for mariculture wastewater treatment

Yedong Gao et al.

Summary: A novel bacterial-algal coupling reactor (BACR) was investigated for efficient treatment of mariculture wastewater. The BACR integrated acidogenic fermentation and microalgae cultivation, and successfully alleviated the pH drop and feedback inhibition of fermentation. The BACR achieved effective removal of pollutants and enrichment of fermentative bacteria and functional genes, leading to enhanced fatty acid production. The co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated the coordination between fermentative bacteria and microalgae in the BACR.

Stable isotope probing reveals specific assimilating bacteria of refractory organic compounds in activated sludge

Haohao Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of refractory organic compounds (ROCs) in sewage and found that different ROCs are degraded by different bacterial communities. Only six bacterial genera were common to all 10 ROCs. The study also showed that these bacteria are difficult to isolate using conventional methods and have low abundance in wastewater treatment.

Microbial Interactions Drive the Complete Catabolism of the Antibiotic Sulfamethoxazole in Activated Sludge Microbiomes

Mengyuan Qi et al.

Summary: The study identified key players involved in the degradation of organic pollutants by differentiating functional activated sludge microbiomes. Primary degraders Paenarthrobacter and Nocardioides were found to play essential roles in the complete catabolism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The research also revealed the internal labor division patterns and connections among active members in collaborative biodegradation, providing insights for synthetic activated sludge microbiomes with optimized environmental functions.

Alkylphenols and Chlorophenols Remediation in Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands: Removal Efficiency and Microbial Community Response

Ines P. F. M. Montenegro et al.

Summary: This study found that phenolic compounds have limited impact on the removal efficiency of organic matter and nutrients in constructed wetlands, but do affect the removal efficiency of PCP to some extent, mainly due to biodegradation. Phenolic compounds do not significantly alter the microbial community structure in wetland substrate, but PCP does reduce microbial diversity.

Occurrence and dissipation mechanism of organic pollutants during the composting of sewage sludge: A critical review

Huixiong Lu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent research on the concentration changes and dissipation pathways and mechanisms of different organic pollutants during sludge composting. Some organic pollutants can be effectively removed through biodegradation or mineralization, but there are also recalcitrant organic pollutants that may pose potential risks for land application. The microbial community and degradation of organic pollutants during sludge composting are influenced by different factors, highlighting the need for further research on removing organic pollutants.

New insights into the evolution of bacterial community during the domestication of phthalate-degrading consortium

Xue-Jing Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the successional variation of bacterial community and metabolism during the enrichment culture of a phthalate-degrading consortium. Results showed a significant increase in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during domestication, while bacterial richness and diversity decreased significantly. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes became dominant phyla associated with phthalate tolerance and degradation. The microbial interaction networks revealed a coexistence of mutualism and competition among members of the bacterial consortium.
