Eco-friendly synthesis of durable aerogel composites from chitosan and pineapple leaf-based cellulose for Cr(VI) removal

Luon Nguyen Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, bio-based aerogels were successfully synthesized from pineapple leaves and chitosan for the removal of chromium (VI) contaminants in water. The synthesized aerogels exhibited lightweight, high porosity, durability, and acid resistance. The chitosan content and pH of the medium were found to significantly affect the chromium (VI) adsorption. The cellulose/chitosan aerogel showed a high retention rate of chromium absorption capacity after multiple absorbing cycles.

Hexavalent chromium-reducing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria are utilized to bio-fortify trivalent chromium in fenugreek by promoting plant development and decreasing the toxicity of hexavalent chromium in the soil

Sumit K. Soni et al.

Summary: This study found that using Cr(VI)-reducing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (MB) can reduce the toxicity of fenugreek to soil and plants, promoting their growth and yield. In addition, by decreasing the bioavailability of Cr(VI), the uptake and translocation of Cr(III) in fenugreek may be improved, thus enhancing its effectiveness in diabetes treatment.

Cationic surface-modified regenerated nanocellulose hydrogel for efficient Cr(VI) remediation

YunJin Kim et al.

Summary: Nanocellulose is gaining interest as an eco-friendly water treatment material due to its large specific surface area and abundant hydroxyl functional groups, but its dispersion state hampers practical usage. A regenerated cellulose hydrogel with cationic functional groups was developed to address the low performance of nanocellulose in removing anionic pollutants. The PEI surface cationization process improved mechanical rigidity and showed excellent Cr(VI) removal capacity, maintaining high efficiency after multiple reuses.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach combining phytoremediation and bio-electrochemical technology to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater using an Acorus calamus L. constructed wetland microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC). The planted CW-MFC showed high efficiency in removing Cr(VI), and the power generation was improved with the addition of low concentrations of Cr(VI). The main removal pathways of Cr involved bio-electrochemical reduction and plant uptake. This research provides valuable insights for the practical application of CW-MFC in Cr(VI)-containing wastewater treatment.
