Nuclear localization signal peptides enhance genetic transformation of Dunaliella salina

Shuying Feng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the combination of trans-activating transcriptional protein (TAT) and nuclear localization signal (NLS) peptides can significantly improve the transformation rate and expression level of foreign genes in the D. salina system. The results show that the addition of TAT and NLS peptides can decrease cytotoxicity and enhance the expression of recombinant proteins.

Enhanced triacyclglycerols and starch synthesis in Chlamydomonas stimulated by the engineered biodegradable nanoparticles

Han Lu et al.

Summary: Microalgae are a promising feedstock for renewable fuels and their oil accumulation can be enhanced by exposure to nanoparticles. However, previous studies have used mostly non-biodegradable nanoparticles, limiting their application in biofuel production. This study reports the use of biodegradable engineered resin nanoparticles (iBCA-NPs) to enhance TAG and starch accumulation in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Short exposure to iBCA-NPs increased cellular TAG and starch contents significantly, with improved TAG production and increased fatty acid content. The addition of iBCA-NPs also increased cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and upregulated the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The study demonstrates a useful approach to enhance energy-rich reserve accumulation in microalgae.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles potentially regulate the mechanism(s) for photosynthetic attributes, genotoxicity, antioxidants defense machinery, and phytochelatins synthesis in relation to hexavalent chromium toxicity in Helianthus annuus L.

Dharmendra Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the toxic mechanisms induced by chromium (VI) and the potential ameliorative effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on its toxicity. The results show that chromium (VI) exposure negatively affects photosynthetic attributes, DNA damage, antioxidative defense mechanisms, and phytochelatin synthesis. However, exposure to TiO2 NPs alleviates chromium (VI) toxicity by regulating these factors and reducing the accumulation of chromium.

Arsenic species and their health risks in edible seaweeds collected along the Chinese coastline

Zhangxun Huang et al.

Summary: This study suggests a potential health risk related to inorganic arsenic exposure in edible seaweed, particularly Sargassum species. Monitoring the risk of iAs exposure through seaweed consumption or livestock feed is important, as arsenic accumulation and speciation may be species-dependent rather than environmental factors.

Enhanced accumulation of oil through co-expression of fatty acid and ABC transporters in Chlamydomonas under standard growth conditions

Ru Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that co-overexpression of chloroplast and endoplasmic reticulum-localized fatty acid transporters in Chlamydomonas enhances lipid accumulation and metabolism, particularly the remobilization of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The findings suggest a potential strategy for increasing the production of energy-rich and value-added compounds in microalgae.

Acclimation and adaptation to elevated pCO2 increase arsenic resilience in marine diatoms

Dong Xu et al.

Summary: Elevated pCO(2) levels are predicted to decrease the bio-toxicity of arsenic on marine primary producers, but the response may decrease after long-term adaptation. Diatoms evolved arsenic detoxification strategies under high pCO(2) conditions, resulting in reduced arsenic content in scallops fed with these selected diatoms.

ROS Induce β-Carotene Biosynthesis Caused by Changes of Photosynthesis Efficiency and Energy Metabolism in Dunaliella salina Under Stress Conditions

Yimei Xi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulatory mechanism of beta-carotene accumulation in Dunaliella salina under stress conditions, revealing a positive correlation between cellular ROS level and beta-carotene content, and a negative correlation between F-v/F-m of PSII and beta-carotene content. Transcriptional analysis showed that ROS induce beta-carotene accumulation by modulating genes involved in photosynthesis and beta-carotene biosynthesis.
