Tracing the synergistic migration of biochar and heavy metals based on 13C isotope signature technique: Effect of ionic strength and flow rate

Yuan Liang et al.

Summary: Understanding the migration of biochar and heavy metals in soil profiles is crucial for assessing the long-term stability and ecotoxicity of heavy metals after biochar remediation. In this study, 13C-labelled biochar was used to trace the migration of biochar and heavy metals in soil profiles, and the impact of ionic strength and flow rate was investigated. The results showed that higher ionic strength and flow rate promoted the release of biochar and facilitated the transport of Cu2+ and Cd2+. However, higher ionic strength inhibited the migration of biochar, whereas flow rate affected the co-migration of Cu2+ and biochar. The findings suggest that the synergistic migration of biochar and heavy metals poses lower risks than the sole migration of soluble metals, with higher ionic strength presenting a higher risk than higher flow rate. These results provide valuable insights for in-situ remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils using biochar.

Long-distance mobilization of chromium(III) in soil associated with submicron Cr2O3

Ling Zhu et al.

Summary: This study reports a high concentration of trivalent chromium in alkaline soils, which challenges the conventional wisdom that trivalent chromium forms insoluble species and has low mobility in soils. The results show that organic matter content and soil texture are critical factors driving the migration of submicron colloids in soils.

Novel efficient capture of Cr(VI) from soil driven by capillarity and evaporation coupling

Zhuo Zhang et al.

Summary: The CEM method utilizes capillarity and evaporation to remove Cr(VI) from contaminated soil without external forces, achieving removal rates of 47.26%, 34.60%, and 52.50% in different soil fractions within 22 days. Further optimization can significantly improve remediation performance, as demonstrated by an increased removal rate of 89.04% in bulk soil after 61 days.

Summary: Understanding the speciation of chromium (Cr) and its stability in soils is crucial for effective remediation, as different Cr forms have varying release mechanisms influenced by factors such as soil acidity and type. Chemical stabilization leads to a higher crystalline structure of Cr in soils, indicating improved stability under such conditions.

Dispersion and transport of microplastics in three water-saturated coastal soils

Xiangyang Gui et al.

Summary: The study examined the transport behaviors of different sized microplastics in three water-saturated coastal soils and found that the properties of the soils significantly impacted the dispersion and migration of the microplastics. The results indicated that the composition of soil solution and solid played crucial roles in the transport of microplastics in coastal areas.

Modeling and visualizing the transport and retention of cationic and oxyanionic metals (Cd and Cr) in saturated soil under various hydrochemical and hydrodynamic conditions

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the comparative transport behaviors of Cd2+ and CrO42- in water-saturated soil columns under different hydrochemical and hydraulic conditions. The results showed that high solution pH inhibited the transport of Cd(II), while the migration of Cr(VI) was promoted at high pH. The increase in ionic strength and flow rate also affected the transport of both metals.

Colloid formation and facilitated chromium transport in the coastal area soil induced by freshwater and seawater alternating fluctuations

Yaqiang Wei et al.

Summary: The seasonal fluctuation of seawater in coastal areas has a close interaction with freshwater, which can affect the behavior of contaminants. This study investigated the transport and transformation of soil colloid and associated Cr during alternating fluctuations of freshwater and seawater through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that seawater fluctuations generated more and larger-sized colloids, which facilitated the transport and transformation of Cr.

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, Mg was selectively removed from COPR using (NH4)(2)SO4 roasting in combination with H2SO4 leaching, leading to increased Cr extraction efficiency. The phase transformation of the Cr host phases was found to be crucial for the sufficient extraction of Cr, providing inspiration for the development of efficient and practical Cr extraction techniques.

Migration of leather tannins and chromium in soils under the effect of simulated rain

De-wen Qiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co migration of leather tannins and Cr in soils through column experiments. The results showed that tannin content in soil positively correlated with total Cr concentration in leachate, while negatively correlated with Cr (VI) concentration. Tannin addition reduced the leaching efficiency of both total Cr and Cr (VI) from the soil, indicating potential for environmental risk mitigation in tanning sites.
