Quantifying ecological and human health risks of metal(loid)s pollution from non-ferrous metal mining and smelting activities in Southwest China

Hao Li et al.

Summary: The release and transfer of heavy metals from natural and anthropogenic sources can pose ecological threats and human health risks. However, the tools for identifying contamination sources and assessing the impact of this transfer have not been well described. This study collected soil samples from areas affected by non-ferrous metal mining and smelting facilities and used two integrated assessment methods based on soil metal content to determine potential pollution sources and assess ecological and human health risks. The results identified industrial activities, traffic emissions, natural sources, and agricultural activities as the main pollution sources, with industrial activities being the major contributor to noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. The study highlights the importance of quantifying risks and prioritizing pollution sources for effective contaminated site risk management.

New insights on the effect of non-ferrous metal mining and smelting activities on microbial activity characteristics and bacterial community structure

Hao Li et al.

Summary: Mining and smelting activities have caused serious heavy metal pollution in the surrounding areas. However, research on microbial activities, community structure, and adaptation in soils near non-ferrous metal mining and smelting areas is still lacking. This study investigated the effects of biotic and abiotic characteristics of soil from inactive and active non-ferrous metal mine smelting facilities on microbial enzyme activity, microcalorimetry, and high-throughput sequencing. Results showed heavy pollution by toxic metals, with arsenic and cadmium being the main contaminants. Microbial acid phosphatase activity and microcalorimetric total heat value were sensitive indicators. Actinobacteria had the highest abundance, followed by Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria. Microbial activities, bacterial community structure, and phenotypes differed between inactive and active sites. Electrical conductivity, metal contents, and bioavailable metal concentrations were key factors influencing microbial activities and community structure.

Comprehensive evaluation of metal(loid)s pollution risk and microbial activity characteristics in non-ferrous metal smelting contaminated site

Hao Li et al.

Summary: Large amounts of metal(loid)s released from abandoned non-ferrous metal smelting sites pose serious environmental risks. This study proposes a weighted comprehensive pollution risk score (CRS) to evaluate the pollution and environmental risk of metal(loid)s, combining two evaluation methods for metal(loid)s pollution and risk index, as well as two microbial activity evaluation methods. The results reveal the metal(loid)s with higher and lower risks in contaminated surface soil, and suggest that microbial activity can serve as a potential indicator of pollution. The study provides useful information for the management and remediation of metal(loid)s polluted sites.

Biogeography, assembly processes and species coexistence patterns of microbial communities in metalloids-laden soils around mining and smelting sites

Bang Liu et al.

Summary: Microbes play crucial roles in biogeochemical cycles of metalloids in mining and smelting areas. Researches have shown significant distance-decay of microbial communities across geographic distances, with differences influenced by soil factors, spatial variations, and metalloid levels. Dispersal limitation and homogeneous selection were found to govern microbial assemblies in different sites, with pH and metalloid levels affecting the deterministic and stochastic processes of microbial communities.

Relationships between microbial activity, enzyme activities and metal(loid) form in NiCu tailings area

Hao Li et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of heavy metals in contaminated tailings areas can lead to physiological changes in microbial communities, increasing respiration and improving microbial activity. However, enzyme activities and enzyme activities index were influenced by environmental factors and metal concentrations, resulting in a decrease in these parameters.

Response of bacterial communities to mining activity in the alpine area of the Tianshan Mountain region, China

Chengyu Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial distribution patterns and environmental factors influencing soil bacterial community composition in an alpine mining area of the Tianshan Mountain region in China. The study found that soil organic carbon concentration increased along the elevation gradient, with the highest concentration in the mining area, leading to increased microbial abundance and species richness. Some metals accumulated significantly in the tailing area were negatively correlated with microbial community structure.
