Impact of biochar colloids on thallium(I) transport in water-saturated porous media: Effects of pH and ionic strength

Yu Cao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the impact of wood-derived biochar (WB) and corn straw-derived biochar (CB) colloids on Tl(I) transport in water-saturated porous media under different pH and ionic strengths. The results showed that WB colloids improved Tl(I) transport under all conditions, while CB colloids only promoted Tl(I) mobility at low ionic strength. The two-site nonequilibrium model and two-site kinetic attachment/detachment model effectively described the transport of Tl(I) and biochar colloids, respectively.

Investigation of protonation and deprotonation processes of kaolinite and its effect on the adsorption stability of rare earth elements

Sen Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the protonation and deprotonation processes of hydroxyl groups on kaolinite surfaces and their impact on the adsorption stability of rare earth elements (REEs). The results showed that the hydroxyl groups on the edge surface of kaolinite were more reactive and favorable for deprotonation. The experimental results confirmed the calculated adsorption energies, demonstrating that REEs preferentially adsorbed on the deprotonated kaolinite surface.

Geochemical signatures of rare earth elements and yttrium exploited by acid solution mining around an ion-adsorption type deposit: Role of source control and potential for recovery

Haiyan Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that elevated concentrations of rare earth elements and yttrium in acid mine drainage are mainly due to the preferential desorption of heavy rare earth elements in clay-rich sediment strata, and the ion exchange process using ammonium sulfate brine. The concentrations of REE + Y decrease progressively during water treatment processes. REE + Y concentrations in AMD are negatively correlated with pH and influenced by acid desorption from minerals.

Zhen Xu et al.

Summary: Accurate prediction of colloid-driven transport of radionuclides in porous media is crucial for the long-term safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal. This study discusses and quantifies the controlling factors and governing mechanisms of co-transport and co-release behavior of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids (BC) through laboratory-scale column experiments, colloid filtration theory, and advection dispersion equation model. The findings provide essential insights for predicting the geological fate and migration risk of radionuclides in the repository environment.

Co-transport of U(VI) and colloidal biochar in quartz sand heterogeneous media

Yufeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of colloidal biochar on U(VI) transport in the environment. The results show that the transport of U(VI) is pH-dependent and insensitive to ionic strength, while the transport of biochar colloids is more sensitive to changes in ionic strength. In the presence of biochar, the transport of U(VI) is significantly facilitated due to U(VI) adsorption. However, at high ionic strength, the transport of biochar is impeded. Colloid size exclusion effect and kinetic attachment/detachment model are observed in the transport of biochar. This work emphasizes the importance of considering the risk assessment of biochar-facilitated heavy metal transport in the remediation of contaminated sites.

Effects of in situ leaching on the origin and migration of rare earth elements in aqueous systems of South China: Insights based on REE patterns, and Ce and Eu anomalies

Xiao-Rui Liu et al.

Summary: In situ leaching of ion-adsorption rare earth element (REE) deposits has led to the release of large amounts of REE-containing wastewater, but there is limited understanding of the origin, distribution, and migration of REEs in aqueous systems. This study investigated a catchment affected by mining activities in South China and found that REE concentrations in groundwater and surface water decreased from upstream to downstream. The study also revealed the transformation of REEs from different chemical species and their enrichment patterns in soil and water.

Abundance, spatial variation, and sources of rare earth elements in soils around ion-adsorbed rare earth mining areas

Wanshu Li et al.

Summary: The enrichment of rare earth elements (REEs) in soils has been a concern for soil health as emerging contaminants. This study collected surface soil samples from southern Jiangxi Province, China, and determined the REEs content and soil physicochemical properties. A model was established to identify the main sources of REEs in the soils. The results revealed spatial variation in soil REEs abundance and a higher median content of light REEs compared to heavy REEs and yttrium. The negative anomalies of Ce and Eu indicated the combined effect of weathering and potential exogenous inputs on soil REEs. Positive matrix factorization modeling indicated that soil parent materials were the primary influence on soil REEs content, with potential anthropogenic sources including mining-related leachate, traffic exhaust, and industrial dust.

Rare-Earth Elements as Natural Tracers for In Situ Remediation of Groundwater

Richard T. Wilkin et al.

Summary: Rare-earth elements (REEs) serve as sensitive tracers for evaluating groundwater interaction with materials for contaminant remediation, with zero-valent iron and organic carbon mixtures effectively reducing contaminant concentrations. The solid-phase partitioning of REEs increases with pH in ZVI systems, while unexpected negative europium anomalies were observed in organic carbon PRBs, providing new insights into redox conditions in treatment zones. REE concentrations and shale-normalized profiles are valuable natural tracers for understanding in situ technologies for groundwater remediation.

Modeling the Transport of Aggregating Nanoparticles in Porous Media

Vasileios E. Katzourakis et al.

Summary: A novel mathematical model was developed to describe the transport of nanoparticles in water-saturated, homogeneous porous media with uniform flow, taking into account their migration, aggregation, and attachment to solid matrices. The model simulations showed significant differences in nanoparticle transport compared to conventional biocolloids, with aggregation impacting attachment and breakthrough differently based on particle size. Useful conclusions were drawn regarding the implications of neglecting aggregation, particle-size dependent dispersivity, and nanoparticle surface charges on results.

Lead(II) adsorption on microwave-pyrolyzed biochars and hydrochars depends on feedstock type and production temperature

Christopher Nzediegwu et al.

Summary: Lead(II) adsorption using carbon-rich chars, produced at different temperatures from various feedstocks, was studied. The results showed that biochars outperformed hydrochars for lead(II) adsorption, with the highest adsorption for canola straw biochar produced at 500°C. Lead(II) adsorption in biochar was mainly attributed to precipitation as hydrocerussite and lead oxide phosphate, whereas in hydrochar it decreased due to interaction with aromatic carbon.
