Carmen M. Dominguez et al.

Summary: This research investigates the acute toxicity of contaminated soils with hazardous chlorinated organic compounds. The study finds that the soils tested showed different levels of contamination and acute toxicity, highlighting the need for remediation. The researchers also observe that the concentration of COCs in the soil is related to their toxicity, and this relationship varies depending on the testing method used.

Enhanced remediation of a real HCH-polluted soil by the synergetic alkaline and ultrasonic activation of persulfate

Alicia Checa-Fernandez et al.

Summary: The utilization of sonochemistry is a promising technology to enhance the decontamination of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in soil. Ultrasound (US) helps break down soil aggregates, facilitating the desorption of HOCs and their subsequent oxidation. Increasing US power accelerates the production of radicals and improves the degradation of pollutants.

Zero-valent iron-induced successive chemical transformation and biodegradation of lindane in historically contaminated soil: An isotope-informed metagenomic study

Jinyu Hou et al.

Summary: The study found that zero-valent iron (ZVI) can promote the biomineralization of lindane, but it has a certain inhibitory effect on the growth and functions of soil bacterial community. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the genes involved in the degradation of lindane were upregulated, but the presence of genes responsible for lindane dechlorination was not confirmed. In addition, the benzoate biodegradation pathway linked to the downstream catabolism of lindane was enhanced.

Highly efficient remediation of decabromodiphenyl ether-contaminated soil using mechanochemistry in the presence of additive and its mechanism

Yunqiang Yi et al.

Summary: This study introduced sodium borohydride as a co-milling additive to enhance the mechanochemical degradation of BDE209-contaminated soil, achieving a removal efficiency of approximately 100% with 2 h of ball milling. Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify the main degradation intermediates and degradation pathway of BDE209. The findings suggest that sodium borohydride-assisted mechanochemistry is a concurrent process of stepwise and multistage debromination.
