Occurrence and dietary exposure risks of phthalate esters in food in the typical valley city Xi'an, Northwest China

Ge Ma et al.

Summary: This study analyzed food samples collected from Xi'an, a typical valley city in Northwest China, and found that diet is an important pathway of human exposure to phthalate esters (PAEs). PAEs were widely detected in the food samples, with plasticizers being the main contributing factor. The bio-availability of PAEs in the gastrointestinal fluid was influenced by their molecular weight, solubility, and vapor pressure. The estimated daily intake of PAEs based on food consumption data was generally lower than the recommended dose, except for a few PAEs that exceeded the health risk threshold. Grains and vegetables were identified as the major sources of dietary exposure to PAEs. Overall, the health risks associated with PAEs in food were relatively low.

Songlin Yu et al.

Summary: The study established an automated method based on the magnetic bead extraction principle for measuring metanephrines and 3-methoxytyramine in plasma, showing excellent linearity and reproducibility compared to traditional solid-phase extraction. This automated approach may indicate a new era for LC-MS/MS in clinical application.

Phthalate metabolites in paired human serum and whole blood

Zhenming Li et al.

Summary: The distribution pattern of phthalate metabolites (PMs) in human blood was investigated in this study. It was found that mono methyl phthalate, mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and mono butyl phthalate were the predominant PMs in both serum and whole blood samples. The mean serum concentrations of PMs were higher in females than males.

The association of serum phthalate metabolites with biomarkers of ovarian reserve in women of childbearing age

Yongcheng Li et al.

Summary: Phthalates, a widely used plasticizer, have raised concerns due to their reproductive toxicity. However, there is limited research on the relationship between phthalate metabolites (mPAEs) in serum and human ovarian function. This study found that certain mPAEs in serum samples were associated with changes in antral follicle count and estradiol levels.

Personal care product use and lifestyle affect phthalate and DINCH metabolite levels in teenagers and young adults

Petra Stuchlik Fiserova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the exposure to phthalates in teenagers and young adults in Czechia. The results showed widespread presence of phthalates in the study population, with concentrations varying with season, gender, age, and lifestyle factors. The study also found a relationship between high levels of phthalates and the overall use of personal care products.

Shengtao Ma et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between external and internal exposure to phthalates and the contribution of dermal absorption to exposure, using paired handwipe and urine samples from residents in a typical urban community in southern China. The results showed that the concentrations and composition profiles of phthalates in handwipes were similar between adults and children, and dermal absorption appeared to be an important exposure pathway, especially for low molecular weight phthalates. Furthermore, children were found to be more sensitive to dermal absorption of phthalates compared to adults.

National-scale urinary phthalate metabolites in the general urban residents involving 26 provincial capital cities in China and the influencing factors as well as non-carcinogenic risks

Senyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed urine samples collected from 26 provincial capitals in China and found that residents had higher levels of exposure to Phthalates (PAEs). Demographic characteristics such as age and educational level were significantly associated with PAE exposure. Geographic differences in exposure levels were also detected.

Maternal exposure to di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) depresses lactation capacity in mice

Pengfei Hou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that DEHP exposure has adverse effects on lactation, including energy insufficiency, inflammation activation, oxidative stress aggravation, and disturbance of milk production. These findings are important for understanding the health risks of the plastic additive DEHP on female lactation dysfunction.

Co-exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalates and their associations with oxidative stress damage in school children from South China

Yingxin Yu et al.

Summary: The study found variations in the concentrations of OH-PAHs and mPAEs in urine based on geographical location, and a positive correlation between 8-OHdG and these substances. OH-PAHs were found to contribute more to oxidative DNA damage when present alongside mPAFs. Risk assessment indicated that while risks from PAHs may be negligible, a significant percentage of school children may face health risks from PAEs, particularly diethylhexyl phthalate.

Phthalate metabolites: Characterization, toxicities, global distribution, and exposure assessment

Ying-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Phthalates, commonly used as plasticizers, have metabolites that may impact human health differently across regions, with Asia, America, and Europe showing variations in exposure levels. Urine is the preferred matrix for assessing phthalate exposure, and more accurate molar fractions of metabolites related to ingested compounds should be collected for different populations in epidemiological or pharmacokinetic studies.
