Benzophenones in the Environment: Occurrence, Fate and Sample Preparation in the Analysis

Andromachi A. Gavrila et al.

Summary: The presence of emerging contaminants in the environment is a serious concern due to the lack of established regulations for some of them. Benzophenones, listed as emerging contaminants, have been found in the environment and human fluids with potential adverse effects on ecosystems. Various methods have been proposed for the extraction and detection of benzophenones in environmental matrices, including fish and sludges. This review critically outlines the sample preparation methods and provides an overview of their occurrence, fate, and toxicity.

Influence of mobile phase composition on the analytical sensitivity of LC-ESI-MS/MS for the concurrent analysis of bisphenols, parabens, chlorophenols, benzophenones, and alkylphenols

Hyeon-Jeong Lee et al.

Summary: Phenols are important environmental endocrine disruptors with potential adverse health effects. A comprehensive and sensitive analytical method for multiple classes of phenols was developed by investigating the influence of mobile phase compositions in LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis. This method allowed for the concurrent ionization of all phenols and significantly improved the analytical sensitivity for certain phenols.

Assessing Performance of Wastewater Treatment Using in Vitro Cell-based Assays

Adamo Riccardo Petosa et al.

Summary: Bioanalytical tools, such as in vitro bioassays, can be used in conjunction with chemical analyses to assess the efficacy of wastewater treatment and potential adverse effects on receiving waters. This study found that while some steroid hormones and indicator compounds were detected in influent samples, their concentrations decreased during treatment, with some compounds persisting in the effluent. The use of bioassays provided additional information on treatment performance, even when target contaminants were not detected, demonstrating the advantages of combining chemical analyses and bioassays for monitoring wastewater treatment efficiency and predicting potential impacts of wastewater discharges.

Occurrence and mass flows of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Sweden's three largest lakes and associated rivers

Daniel Malnes et al.

Summary: This study assessed the occurrence and mass flows of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Sweden's main lakes and associated rivers. The study found that the CEC concentration in river water was generally higher than in lake water. Seasonal variations of CECs were observed at urban lake sites. Further investigations are needed to understand the impact of CECs on the ecosystem and human health, as these lakes are used as drinking water reservoirs.

Structure-related endocrine-disrupting potential of environmental transformation products of benzophenone-type UV filters: A review

Lale Carstensen et al.

Summary: Benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs) are a diverse group of chemicals used in various industries worldwide. They can be found in different environmental compartments and have endocrine disrupting effects. Biodegradation and photolytic decomposition are the major elimination processes for BPs, with the formation of hydroxylated BPs during biodegradation showing increased endocrine activity.

EcoSun Pass: A tool to evaluate the ecofriendliness of UV filters used in sunscreen products

S. Pawlowski et al.

Summary: The study evaluated 24 EU-approved UV filters for sunscreen applications for their environmental hazard profiles. Nine example UV filter compositions for SPF 30 and 50 were assessed for ecofriendliness using the ESP tool. Results showed that two out of four SPF 30 compositions and two out of five SPF 50 compositions were considered ecofriendly. The most ecofriendly formulations also had the lowest overall UV filter content, using innovative and least hazardous UV filters.

Occurrence and removal of chemicals of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving water systems

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are major sources of Emerging Chemicals of Concern (CECs) in aquatic environments, impacting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated 164 CECs at 15 locations, with CEC concentrations varying widely between WWTPs. The K-d of CECs correlated with K-ow, allowing for prediction of their distribution in water and solids. WWTP effluent had higher CEC concentrations than upstream waters, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems.
