Sources, transfers and the fate of heavy metals in soil-wheat systems: The case of lead (Pb)/zinc (Zn) smelting region

Jun Xu et al.

Summary: This study examined the environmental effects of smelting activities on farmland soil and evaluated the enrichment, transfer, and health risk of heavy metals (HMs) in soil-wheat systems. The results showed that HMs from smelter waste were transferred to the surrounding soil, with enrichment in soil-wheat systems mainly determined by total HM concentration and soil pH. Cd was identified as the priority pollutant in soil-wheat systems, and its presence affected the transfer of Cu, Mn, and Pb from soil to wheat roots. Certain molecular functional groups in wheat were found to be involved in detoxifying HMs. The consumption of wheat grain was associated with notable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. This study highlights the importance of addressing the issues arising from smelting activities on agricultural soils and suggests considering alternative crops to ensure food security.

Chromium biogeochemical cycling in basalt-derived paddy soils from the Leizhou Peninsula, South China

Zhaoxia Xia et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanisms controlling Cr transformation during anoxic-oxic alternation in basalt-derived paddy soils. It reveals that available Cr fractions increase under anoxic phase but decrease under oxic phase, indicating the reversibility of Cr availability. The study also establishes kinetic models to quantitatively describe Cr transformation during anoxic-oxic alternation in these soils.

Salinity elevates Cd bioaccumulation of sea rice cultured under co-exposure of cadmium and salt

Xu Yang et al.

Summary: Salt-tolerant rice (sea rice) is an important cultivar for increasing rice yields in salinity soil. The co-existence of salinity and cadmium (Cd) toxicities in the plant-soil system poses a great challenge for sustainable agriculture. This study investigated the Cd accumulating features of sea rice under the co-stress of Cd and salinity. The results showed that sea rice accumulates more Cd than other high-Cd-accumulating rice varieties, and there is a positive correlation between Cd and Na levels in sea rice. The study also found that the coexistent Cd and salinity stress inhibited rice growth and yield, but the Cd concentration in rice grain was relatively low. Further research is needed to identify the phytoremediation potential of sea rice in Cd-polluted saline soil.

Impacts of periodic saltwater inundation on heavy metals in soils from the Pearl River Delta, China

Weikang Sheng et al.

Summary: The alluvial plain delta in the Pearl River Delta is threatened by complex land-sea interactions caused by rising sea levels and increasing storm surges resulting from global environmental change. A study was conducted on topsoil samples from the delta, subjecting them to artificial saltwater inundation treatments with varying salinities for 50 days to investigate the impact on heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn) in soils. The study found that saltwater inundation promoted the release of heavy metals, with the extraction rate being highest at 40%o salinity. However, a higher sulfate concentration at 50%o salinity could suppress the release of heavy metals.

Songxiong Zhong et al.

Summary: Rice utilizes different strategies and sources to absorb iron depending on water conditions. Isotope signature combined with gene expression analysis revealed that under flooded conditions, rice predominantly absorbs Fe(III)-DMA from Fe plaque, while under drained conditions, it primarily absorbs Fe2+ from soil solution.

Humates and Chlorides Synergistically Increase Cd Phytoaccumulation in Strawberry Fruits, Heightening Health Risk from Cd in Human Diet

Gabrijel Ondrasek et al.

Summary: The study found that salt-affected and sandy soils can exacerbate the transfer of the metal cadmium into the food chain. Salinity, humates, and cadmium contamination significantly influenced the accumulation of cadmium in strawberry plants, with elevated concentrations exceeding the European maximum limit in leaves and fruits. Surface analyses revealed the different properties of the substrates, with the SiO2-rich substrate having a nonporous and chemically unreactive surface, and the humates matrix characterized by abundant micro-porosity and reactive radicals. Chemical speciation modeling showed that most of the cadmium in the rhizosphere solution was dissolved and distributed among various pools, including bioavailable Cd2+, Cl-complexed, and HA-complexed forms.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of salt water intrusion on the availability of cadmium (Cd) in paddy soil. Results showed that the presence of salt water increased the positive charges on soil surfaces, inhibiting Cd adsorption through electrostatic repulsion, and facilitated the formation of Cd-chloro complexes, promoting Cd release from soil particles.

Cadmium in Rice Is Affected by Fertilizer-Borne Chloride and Sulfate Anions: Long-Term Field Versus Pot Experiments

Babar Hussain et al.

Summary: The long-term experiment showed that Cl- based fertilizers significantly increased the accumulation of Cd in rice plants, while SO42- had no significant effect. However, the short-term experiment revealed that SO42- based fertilizers reduced the uptake of Cd by rice plants from Cd contaminated soils. These findings are important for rational fertilization and safer rice production.

Seawater intrusion induced cadmium activation via altering its distribution and transformation in paddy soil

Wenting Chi et al.

Summary: Seawater intrusion can pose environmental risks to paddy soils around estuaries, with the impacts on the availability of heavy metals still being unclear. This study found that increasing salinity levels led to higher release of Cd from soils, indicating that Cd competition by cations and complexation by anions dominated the release rather than pH. Additionally, the availability of Cd in paddy soil was found to be enhanced with increasing salinity levels, especially during drainage, indicating the importance of high salinity in influencing Cd availability in paddy soil.

Summary: This review discusses the deleterious effects of cadmium in plants and the evolution of tolerance and resistance mechanisms. Cadmium negatively affects seed germination, early seedling growth, and plant biomass, as well as photosynthesis, water content, transpiration rate, and electrolyte leakage. Plants have developed detoxification mechanisms to exclude or accumulate cadmium, and utilize signaling pathways, hormone synthesis, antioxidant systems, and other strategies to adapt to cadmium toxicity. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in reducing metal phytoavailability and enhancing plant morphological and physiological parameters for cadmium tolerance.
