Structural evolution during a surge in the Paulabreen glacier system, Svalbard

Harold Lovell et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of glaciological structures during the surge period of the Paulabreen glacier system in Svalbard from 2003 to 2005. The results show that the surge caused physical changes in glaciological structures, including changes in crevasse patterns and shear planes, as well as displacement and tilt of the glacier front.

Mass Loss of Glaciers and Ice Caps Across Greenland Since the Little Ice Age

Jonathan L. Carrivick et al.

Summary: Glaciers and ice caps (GICs) in Greenland have experienced significant fragmentation and mass loss since the Little Ice Age (LIA) termination in 1900. The number of glaciers has increased from 5327 to 5467, with at least 587 km(3) of ice lost from the ablation areas. The long-term mean mass balance has been estimated to be negative, and the rate of mass loss has increased threefold between 2000 and 2019. The spatial variability in glacier changes highlights the complex challenges in understanding regional and local factors affecting glacier evolution.

Dynamics throughout a complete surge of Iceberg Glacier on western Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian High Arctic

Benoit Lauzon et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the dynamics of Iceberg Glacier and provides detailed observations of a complete surge in the Canadian Arctic for the first time. Various types of data were used to quantify the changes in terminus position, ice velocity, and glacier thickness since the 1950s. The surge that occurred from 1981 to 2003 resulted in significant changes in surface elevation and mass transfer down-glacier.

Ocean-Forcing and Glacier-Specific Factors Drive Differing Glacier Response Across the 69°N Boundary, East Greenland

S. Brough et al.

Summary: The Greenland ice sheet has been a major contributor to global sea level rise for the past 40-50 years, with increased ice discharge from marine-terminating outlet glaciers being responsible for half of Greenland's mass loss since 1992. This study presents a time series analysis of ice frontal positions for 24 marine-terminating outlet glaciers along Greenland's east coast from 2013 to 2020. The results show that 19 out of the 24 glaciers experienced net retreat. There were significant differences in interannual patterns of frontal position between glaciers located north and south of 69 degrees N, with glaciers south of 69 degrees N undergoing multiyear retreat starting in 2016 due to warmer ocean waters and ice-melange break-up. Glaciers north of 69 degrees N showed limited change in frontal positions with greater variability between glaciers. The findings highlight the continuing significance of the 69 degrees N boundary in determining glacier response to climate forcing in east Greenland.

Global clustering of recent glacier surges from radar backscatter data, 2017-2022

Andreas Kaab et al.

Summary: Using global Sentinel-1 radar backscatter data, this study systematically maps the distribution of glaciers with surge-type activity during 2017-2022. The analysis reveals 115 surge-type events globally, with the majority occurring on glaciers already known to have surge activity. The study also highlights pronounced spatial clustering of surge events in the Karakoram, Pamirs and Western Kunlun Shan region, Svalbard, and Yukon/Alaska.

Accelerating Ice Loss From Peripheral Glaciers in North Greenland

Shfaqat A. Khan et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the peripheral glaciers in Greenland have experienced significant mass loss, contributing substantially to rising sea levels. Despite their small coverage area (4% of Greenland's ice), their mass loss is disproportionately large compared to the Greenland ice sheet. Satellite data shows that the mass loss from Greenland's peripheral glaciers has increased, with a fourfold increase observed in North Greenland. While mass loss from peripheral glaciers is widespread, there is also a complex regional pattern where increased precipitation at higher altitudes partially offsets increased melting at lower altitudes.

A Machine Learning Framework to Automate the Classification of Surge-Type Glaciers in Svalbard

C. Bouchayer et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the transient behavior of surge-type glaciers. A machine learning framework is developed to classify these glaciers based on various features. The study focuses on the Svalbard archipelago and finds that the surface and bed slopes, ice thickness, glacier width, climatic mass balance, and runoff are significant factors in determining surge probability. The study also creates a probability map of surge-type glaciers in Svalbard.

Summary: This study provides a regionally resolved inventory of surge-type glaciers in High Mountain Asia and explores their occurrence and characteristics. The findings reveal that surge-type glaciers are mainly concentrated in the Karakoram and Pamir regions, and they cover 19.5% of the glacierized area in the region. Additionally, the study validates previously identified possible surge-type glaciers and identifies 491 new surge-type glaciers that have not been reported before.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

The presence and influence of glacier surging around the Geladandong ice caps, North East Tibetan Plateau

Owen King et al.

Summary: This study examined glacier surging at the Geladandong ice caps on the Tibetan Plateau and identified 19 surge-type outlet glaciers. It was found that the mass budgets of surge-type glaciers vary depending on the portion of the surge-cycle captured by geodetic data. The results highlight the importance of accurate surge-type glacier inventories and the need for maximizing geodetic data coverage over glacierised regions containing surge-type glaciers.

High Mountain Asian glacier response to climate revealed by multi-temporal satellite observations since the 1960s

Atanu Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: The study highlights the increasing glacier mass loss rates in High Mountain Asia since the 1960s, with the highest rates observed in Central Himalaya and Northern Tien Shan regions. Summer temperature increase is identified as the main driver of long-term mass loss trend, even in regions where glaciers were previously in balance with climate. Multi-platform satellite observations over six decades reveal widespread glacier mass loss across High Mountain Asia, reflecting regional climatic differences.

Sudden large-volume detachments of low-angle mountain glaciers more frequent than thought?

Andreas Kaab et al.

Summary: Glacier detachments in low-angle glaciers are not rare, often caused by a combination of factors; the soft condition of glacier beds and partial thaw may play a key role in detachment; glacier detachments may represent a combination of glacier surges and ice break-offs from steep glaciers.
